Moving To The USA
Discussion
Afternoon Fellow Pistonheaders!
I've been thinking today, As its very hard to find a job in this country why can I not just up sticks and move over to the US, I'm 19 years old so I have nothing holding me back just yet.
Would anybody recommend moving living in the US, How hard will it be to get a job over there? I have a Btec National Diploma (I know it doesn't sound like much!)
Is it challenging obtaining a work visa?
Look forward to your replys!
Ben

It took a while for the OP to realise he wasn't going to be going to the US.

Honestly? On the face of it, not a snowball's chance in hell of you getting a visa unless you've got some cash to invest, family over there, or some seriously desirable skills beyond the BTEC that you're not telling us about.
As someone in the middle of the visa process, it's a long and arduous grind that'll put paid to any half-hearted enquiry. But, it's a fabulous place and I can't wait to get out there permanently.

Find an american girl and marry her.
Or do what I did, big company, sponsored secondment on a big project over there. Those lads that wanted to stay longer in the USA generally took the marry option above and are still there now (driving V8s, paying bugger all for fuel, enjoying the Texas weather etc).
It's a great life experience to work abroad IMHO.

What makes you say that?
Well for a start NZ are only allowing immigration in certain professions unless you have $NZ1M to aupport yourself. Oz only want the same plus those with mining experience wtc for WA.
Not sure about Canada but believe they are fairly tight too.
Incidentally, with current ex rates Oz is horrifically expensive for a Brit. If you are not financially healthy here, you'll be destitute there at the mo.

A guy I worked with left here at the end of January and has moved to Christchurch, NZ. He's had several interviews and at least one job offer in the last month or so.

It is something that is going to become a large issue for the country as they need reasonably large scale immigration to keep their economy growing and the exchange rate will keep out the kind of people they ideally want to bring in. i.e Reasonably solvent young families.

As a regular visitor to Oz that's not strictly true. As somebody with no assets moving to Australia the exchange rate makes no difference as the Australian wages reflect the Australian prices. If you are holidaying there or relocating with assets such as a house to sell it is a very bad time.

You're right. My brother and his (merkin) girlfriend are in Oz at the minute. It's horrifically expensive, but their salary is unimaginably good for the jobs they're doing. It is something that is going to become a large issue for the country as they need reasonably large scale immigration to keep their economy growing and the exchange rate will keep out the kind of people they ideally want to bring in. i.e Reasonably solvent young families.
Incidentally, their long term plan is to move to America, likely end of 2013.
