Is the grass greener?

Thought I'd ask this question to the wise audience that lives on PH.

I work for a multinational in the automotive sector in the South East. I have recently completed CIMA, and, as I have been told, the world is now my oyster. Where I currently work does have its advantages - good pay, easy life, 8 hours a day and rarely any extra required, final salary pension, chance to (slowly) progress and move into other areas. Once people join, they rarely leave. I guess it's like most other multinationals from that point of view.

However, in the 4 years I have been there, I've never really been stimulated by the work. The pace of work is... slow. It seems more bureaucratic as the months go on, and you can work your a*** off, yet if someone else is 'perceived' to be better, they'll be promoted ahead of you. I also don't want to be the person that stays with the same company for their entire working career - not that there's anything wrong with it, but I would personally like to experience different aspects of life.

Now, I have come across another job fairly nearby, working for another multinational but this time in the supermarket sector. They are recruiting for CIMA-qualified analysts and I am very aware that this company is rapidly expanding abroad. This would lead me to believe that a) the pace of work will be quicker and b) the work will be more interesting. I would expect the salary/overall package to be the same if not better.

I guess what I am asking is, will the grass be greener? I'm assuming there will be a degree of bureaucracy wherever you work. I know I've got a good deal at the moment, so would I be mad applying for somewhere else?

Thanks in advance.

What are your prospects for change/advancement within your company now you've qualified? Since they've spent all that money on you I doubt they'll want you to leave straight away. Have a chat to your line manager.

You won't escape this little quirk I'm afraid, no matter where you work; us humans rarely operate at a rational level. Good luck!

Supermarkets can be very interesting, loads of areas to be involved in (Retail, Supply Chain, Trading/Marketing, Group, Financial Appraisal etc, etc).

If you're thinking of the big one to the north of London then use the interview process to be absolutely sure that it is right for you.

I know 3 very, very good ex colleagues who went there and found that the 'grass wasn't greener'. The culture and a way of working doesn't suit everyone. They're all now thriving elsewhere.

The other 2, to the south and west, are supposed to be very good to work for.
