Application by CV

A crap way of getting applicants for a professional job IMO, but does anyone have any pointers?

I do have a CV, but my work experience isnt what the company are after I dont think - this is an office based role and will be my first long term job after university. My background is all practical work experience and 'studenty' jobs, even if they are related. For example, the job is for an agricultural market analyst, and I have a lot of practical farming experience, mixed in among bar work, sales jobs etc. How can I link my bar work to the job in hand, or is it best to leave it off?

Also Im conscious of the need to keep it fairly brief, while trying to include everything relevant.

Can the covering letter (not that it asks for one!) be used to sell myself, or is it supposed to be short as well?

I'm in a similar(ish) position in looking for work now but what I'm looking to do is more specialised than my CV suggests.

The Internet is throwing up a severe lack of decent opportunities so I've taken it upon myself to phone Directors for chats and then follow up with a formal application if they think they may have something for me.

I think it shows more of a proactive approach than firing out CVs and covering letters. They also get a better initial impression of you over the phone (and avoid recruiters at the same time).

Have a look at the skills necessary and make sure everything in your CV highlights at least one of them.

We all have a whole heap of experiences and competencies that very often translate well across a number of sectors. The trick is to be able to draw them out and present them as credible on a CV. Happy to have an initial scan if that would help. If you can attach the person spec for the role you're after too, better still. Good luck!
