Brief summary...

Got offered a job on the 16/01/12.

Im still waiting on a start date, i have phoned three times and they have said they are waiting for my CRB check to come back.

So its been 4 1/2 months and still no word, not to let me know what is going on or anything, they have not contacted me, just me them.

Quite unproffesional i think.

How long do these checks take?, because its starting to take the piss now, i have turned down 3 other jobs while waiting for this one. (due to this one being the better of the three)

I have no criminal convictions and my history is easily checkable (8 years in the forces as of last sept)

Am i right to keep ringing? I dont want to seem to be annoying, but im skint and not working is really starting to piss me off.

I don't think it is the CRB check they are waiting for, perhaps funding for the job has been withdrawn and they aren't telling you. I have to have an enhanced CRB every year an it takes about a week. My wife has had her first one done recently and that was about two weeks. As she is Canadian and only lived here for three years I was expecting it to take longer. The company she is now working for said it can take upto one month.

That's unusual, because in the past when I have been subject to this, you start the job and the application goes in, then when it arrives, they date it retrospectively to the start of the job. This seems a soft way to do things, but it happens all the way up the UK Gov't vetting chain. It can take 4 weeks for CRB, maybe longer for Enhanced CRB. For example, I had a month long contract for a school, started job, applied for CRB, I think the CRB all-clear arrived on my second to last day. Work that one out!

Yep, I understand you receive one before the employer. The employer should know that, too!

You could have gone through positive vetting with full background checks and interviews in that time-frame. Something is not right. They're either got a masssive backlog in your area - olympics??? - or there is something wrong with the job.

I'd be tempted to call whoever is doing the vetting direct rather than via the employer.

when was the OP last CRB'd ?

Ironically being in the forces can be worse for initial CRB checks as they have to check with all the Civvie police for the addresses you have as well as the Service police - you weren't based abroad for any period in the last 4-5 years of your service were you?

the other thing to remember is that enhanced CRB and security clearances look for different things ...

Can it really take 5 months though?

The job involves dealing with cash, so other checks may be needed.

I just think its bordering on ridiculous now, not to mention the fact that i have not recieved one call/e-mail to let me know how the process is going.

This is my first real dealing with a civilian company since leaving the forces, and to be honest im dissapointed at the level of unprofessionalism shown.

EnCRB for handling cash , that might be the problem , as it's not actually a valid reason to request enhanced

the thing you and yo the applicant get back from the CRB is a 'disclosure'

CRB has a terminology and myth terminology of it;s own

it's not a 'check' or a 'certificate' as you can't 'pass ' or 'fail' a CRB

Just a thought, if an employer is not entitld to ask for a CRB check, but says that they want one or the job is not available. Apart from not taking the job, what can you do.

If you've got the application number, then there's a tracking service here - http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/agencies-public-bodie...

Timings seem to be pretty arbitrary. Generally it takes a little longer for people born overseas but I've seen people I'd expect done in a couple of weeks to take several months for no obvious reason.

IIRC for enhanced police checks the Chief Police Officer has to give their opinion on certain elements and I suspect a bottleneck could easily be created if they are busy on something.

The whole CRB thing was pretty poorly implemented at first. It's been improved for the better but a lot of companies haven't updated their internal policies. For example, the certificates are now transferable between companies so you should be able to use the 1 year old one you have.

Whether or not you are eligible for an enhanced check you can find from here

Does anyone know if a company has a right to see your disclosure certificate? I work for an IT sevices company who has contracts in schools and prisons so I have to have an enhanced CRB. I am working at a school currently who wouldn't allow me onsite unescorted without first having a photocopy of my disclosure certificate.

There could be some personal information on the certificate that you wouldn't want people to see, in fact the back of it says not to give this information out and to report it if the certificate is lost. Most places just ask for the disclosure number, and date of issue.

Enhanced CRB usually means direct contact with vulnerable adults and/or children.
You cannot work public facing until CRB comes through stisfactory.
Enhanced involves a check with neighbouring police forces to your home force, this can be a big cause of delay (mine took 5 months)
Ask your prospective employer if they can find you something non public facing while you wait.
