summer jobs for student types

I am finishing uni for summer within the next few weeks and will once again be looking for a summer job to keep me busy and to save up some money for the next year. Previously I have always got work that was relevant to my course (motorsport engineering), this meant that I was learning a lot and enjoying my work but wasn't earning very much, which wasn't really a big concern. This year is different, I already have a motorsport based position on the BTCC weekends so a position relevant to my course isn't a necessity and simply it's about earning as much money as possible to fund my next year and hopefully to finish off my track car too.
Any suggestions of where to look / what to do? I'm not shy to long hours or getting grubby. I have my own transport and I also live a 45 min train ride away from london city center.

Civil Service is always looking for office temps - they usually don't bother filing for 10 months of the year and get students in to do it over the summer. That's what they did at my local MoD anyway. Pay is OK, and I spent the whole time on my own in a store room listening to the radio and eating crisps.

Agencies, particularly those looking for support with the Olympics, are hungry for staff. There should be no student at a loose end this summer! Google is all you need. Good luck!

From personal experience I would say go for night shift work in a factory. Unsociable working allowance + over-time once past your normal working week soon add up.

I was taking home circa 600 quid a week in the early 90s working in a bread factory doing 7x12 hour shifts. It was bloody hard work because I was given all the crap and physically demanding jobs that everyone hated but the money was incredible for a 21 year old student. Sadly I was only able to secure that job one year, but mates who were also doing night factory work in other companies were also earning good money. It was also a great motivator because doing that for the rest of my life would have been soul (and body) destroying.

cheers for the responses, the olympics would be a good one but a race weekend falls right in the middle of it and i doubt they will let me have it off. Where do you find out about these factory and military ones just through job advert websites? I've checked a few local job agency websites and they mainly just seem to have adverts about filling in surveys. Sorry for all the questions but I have been lucky before as the job was what I was interested in so I have either known what company I wanted to target or have been contacted about said work, this time I don't really care I just want something that isn't specialised that rewards working hard hours

Are there any warehouses around near you? Order picking is far from glamorous but if you get with an agency you will be able to say when you can and can't work.

I spent a lot of time in warehouses when I was a student, it wasn't much fun but there was plenty of overtime available. If you work antisocial hours it will also kill your social life which will assist in helping with your money, if you are earning it you can't be out spending it!
