Is it possible to be mis-sold a job?
Discussion
Hello all, I’ll try and keep it brief and thanks to all the responses in advance.
I went into a company as a temp and must have done something right as I subsequently had an offer of a permanent job. In the handful of weeks that led up to this point I had a number of conversations with my manager in which he would mention how essential further training would be for me to get to where he thought I could be and his vision of how this new role would develop which promised much; lots of good experience building on the foundations of what I had achieved thus far in my career.
As it is after 18 months and a change of manager none of those enticing elements of our conversations have materialised! My specific question about all this is; are employers allowed to do this sort of thing legally? Can you be mis-sold a job? Are there any cases of this in employment law that anybody is aware of?
There is of course a considerable amount of detail not described here but hopefully the overview provides the gist of it all. I have to confess that the situation leaves me lacking trust in this organisation and many of the individuals in it as time has gone on.
Suffice to say I am looking for another job!

Not quite the same situation but I once applied for a sales role with a retail company (not one I recognized off the top of my head). When I turned up for the interview I straight away thought something was wrong as there was minimal furniture in the waiting room and it just looked like a rented, temporary premises.
Anyway long and short of it they wouldn't tell me any proper info about the job role but said I had been successful to progress to the next stage, which was another interview where more job details would be shared.
I was suspicious and googled the company when I got home from the interview and it turns out the only thing that company do is 'on the street' marketing research, not quite what I was told in the interview!
Always do your research!

As I understand from your post, a plan for CPD was discussed but has failed to materialise. This is not uncommon, but certainly salvageable. Assuming (dangerous, I know!) you have one, at annual appraisal you need to agree a relevant, but more importantly, achievable and affordable, CPD plan. This should have milestones (dates) by which you can both measure success or not. Whilst this will have been agreed, you will also need to drive this yourself to a degree and create the time and space in-between your day-to-day responsibilities. I would also anticipate that you would be doing additional CPD in your own time and cost as part of your self-improvement plan. Good luck!

sounds like my job, but ive been doing it 6 years..
Promised everything, given nothing. Isnt that pretty much standard for large companies?
I would say it's more common in small companies. Large ones usually take training and development fairly seriously.Promised everything, given nothing. Isnt that pretty much standard for large companies?
I was quite surprised when a new telesales bird in one small company I worked at told me she was looking forward to the business class travel around the world with her husband.

Perhaps her hubby has a job with business class travel for him and his wife? I was quite surprised when a new telesales bird in one small company I worked at told me she was looking forward to the business class travel around the world with her husband.

Larger companies with more developed HR departments will generally have a formal career development process but if there is a cost involved then you'll still have to make a business case for them doing it.

Aha, I did that once. A company called Inner Vision, they completely sold me a job in door to door sales, had me believing I was going to be a team leader and earning a grand a week.Anyway long and short of it they wouldn't tell me any proper info about the job role but said I had been successful to progress to the next stage, which was another interview where more job details would be shared.

I was told on the phone it would be an nationwide sales and research company, as a sales executive responsible for office management and earning a s
t ton of commision. I did a bit of research and it turned out to be a con, they got people in, to do door to door.
