17 Year Old Stuck
Discussion
Hi everyone!,
Been looking and applying for jobs for a while now and i nothing has came up. I have been applying for admin jobs and also retail jobs because i have worked in retail on a paid work experience scheme before.
Been to college and studied Renewables for a year felt like a massive waste of time and it was.
I have also been applying for vehicle mechanic apprenticships. I have a few months of experience in a garage and i also help a team up at Knockhill most weekends. I seems when i am applying for mechanical apprenticships all they wont is people with good grades?
With the retail jobs and admin jobs they want people with at least 1 years experience. How am i going to get that when no one will give me a job?!.
My girlfriend works for a investment company at the age of 16 in Edinburgh and is getting alot of money so a few months ago i applied for it in the same way she did. She put a good word in for me and they said they would look out my application. I get an email back saying i dont have good enough grades and that i would need 5 credit grades. My girlfriend has 2. What i find is also very anoying is that they say they are all about equal opportunites and trying to get young people into the work place. Over the past few months i have been speaking with my girlfriend about her job and so far 2 people have left/fired. One of them because they like to travel and go to gigs alot so they didnt have time for work? Another one was fired because she always took days off and they then granted her a months leave because of depression even though on her facebook she was partying every night and doing drugs. She finally got fired because it got out that she was put in hospital for an overdose
. This really really gets me down because im willing to do anything that is thrown at me and i would kill to be doing there job yet they dont even give me a chance?
If anyone knows of any companies in edinburgh that need someone leave a comment or something. Starting to get depressed sitting in the house all day
.

.Yea she went through a special scheme
.
Im just starting to loose all faith because no one is even interested. Sitting at home all day with the dog doing nothing watching the same tv applying for jobs is so depressing.
Sounds silly but i would like to start my own buisness. I have some money saved that was ment for a car but i could invest it?

Do some voluntary work show these employers that you are willing to work hard. They say you need experience it doesn't say paid experience.
I volunteered for a charity who had been given a market stall free by the council, I was basically running this for a few months every day of the week. This kind of stuff looks great on your CV.
Similarly what does your Knockhill experience look like on your CV? these guys with grades don;t have the experience you do.

You probably need to improve your CV, from what you've written above I would employ you but its not the messsage that matters its how its delivered always remember that.
You need to sell your self, you need to understand how recruiters think.
At 17 I didnt have a clue about the world around me and how things work, if I was in your position I would research as much as possible about the world of work and how it all works, what recruiters are really looking for etc.
Your OP sounds like a cry for help and its a good step but you need to help yourself, figure things out and ask more targeted questions.
First step is to Sort out your CV, Personal Statement & Covering letter.
Just be aware that to get a job and succeed in the world of work you may need to change who you are, your personality, your outlook, your morals, your appearance especially if you are a straight white male.

Well for starters any employer who has put that in an advert or informed you as such are going to get themselves sued under the age discrimination act. Companies have been sued successfully by people who have not even managed to get an interview when this criteria has been used for interview selection. With the retail jobs and admin jobs they want people with at least 1 years experience. How am i going to get that when no one will give me a job?!.
You can't bandy that about though as any potential employer would run a mile from anyone reciting Employment Law to them to get an interview!
Thanks for the feedback!
I have actually made about 4 CV's since the start of this year changing wee area's. I went to a job centre and they told me to go to another agency for people under 18. When i got there i explained my situation and they say they would help. I was told to show them my CV and they honestly changed about 1 line and then said thats you done keep looking for jobs. Great help
I applied for a job in a shop selling laptops etc and at about 9pm the same night i get a text of one of them employees saying that he had given the manager my CV and they really liked it but they were concerned i lived so far away. Currently i am near corstorphine Edinburgh and the job is located in town. Considering my girlfriend lives with me and it takes her 20 mins to get in town. The mysterious texter told me that he knew how hard it was to get a job at my age and wanted to give me a chance so we started chatting and i emailed my CV. They looked over it and changed a few wee bits to make it look better to his boss and i was to resend it to them. I did this yesterday and i also phoned them about mid day and they said they were looking at it. I am still waiting on a reply from them but i doubt it will go anywhere.
Also about starting my own buisness-
I only have about 1.5k to even do anything and i know this is not alot but if there was some way i could invest it i would do it. I could maybe set up an online shop? Discount website? <- Watching to much of the apprentice haha!.
All thoughts from you are really appreciated

Did he not buy things from a cash and carry and sell them on? I know a few people that do strange dealing and get a few bob from it!
Or i could just buy a a load of cocaine and sell it
"After leaving school in Hackney aged 16, Alan Sugar started selling car aerials and electric goods out of a van he bought for £50. In 1968, he founded Amstrad, and now, over 40 years later, he has an estimated worth of £730 million, and was ranked 85th in the Sunday Times Rich List."Or i could just buy a a load of cocaine and sell it

If you need a good accountant Eric's your man,..... nothing dodgy mind you...

See my original questions.
What are you interested in?
What business experience have you got (obviously, at 17 I wouldn't expect a huge amount).
Do you have a natural ability to buy and sell and make a profit?
Can you sell some skill or expertise you have acquired in life (although, again, at 17 I wouldn't expect so).
