Define standard. As a sales roles go, this used to be the norm before the internet annonymised everything. "show me what you can do, and if you're any good i'll hire you". Infact the BBC have made a hell of alot of money doing something like this with a certain show....

Furthermore, why should an employer break the law by not adhering to minimum wage and employment legislation? A genuine internship can offer no pay but must empart a suitable learning experience which is unlikely to let you "prove how good you are".2 sMoKiN bArReLs said:

it's a recession and jobs are hard to come by. You can't knock a bloke for trying 
This approach actually matches two proven theories; interviewing alone is insufficient to find the best person for a role, but if interview is all you have, then 3 key areas need determining: can you do the job, do you enjoy doing the job and will you fit the organisation. Some may say that OP's approach would help determine the latter better than an interview? I would however imagine some sort of pre-selection would still be required (CRB if neccesary, legally entitled to work, check references, check quals etc, etc).
Look it's great to keep trying but it's getting on for a year now since graduation. Is it time to stop holding out for a good job yet? How do you even tell which ones are good ones without a bit of experience under your belt?
What have you been dong to fill your time and your cv in the meantime?
And if you change your mind I still have vacancies that need filling.
ETA genuine jobs in one of your desired fields, just not in the City. I won't ask a third time.

Sorry misery guts, I must have missed the rule that says any light hearted jokes or gentle piss taking must be confined to the lounge.
Actually on topic, good on the OP for trying a different approach, knowing a number of people who are scrabbling around looking for stuff this is probably one of the most proactive approaches I've seen, it's rare to see anyone (especially grads) offering something in return for nothing just to get noticed.

Actually it seems the OP has posted three or four similar threads going back quite some time, so I'd be interested to hear what jobs he's taken in the meantime to prove to an employer he's prepared to graft and has a strong work ethic, rather than waiting for his dream job to land in his lap.Thanks for the responses everyone, though I wasn't quite expecting the thread to turn out like this.

I've been applying for seemingly basic jobs, some of which are in industries not mentioned in my OP.
I have applied to some jobs that do not require/mention degrees. Local retail doesn't want me either.
To fill my time, I've been lending a hand to my dad's business and going to the gym a lot.
Thanks, I'd like to hear more about the vacancies you have. I've not limited myself to the City. I drove 450 miles a few weeks ago for a job I didn't get. Do you have anything close to London/The South? Thanks.

Been applying to all sorts (including non-grad, such as retail and admin).Have tried a bit of networking, offering to work for free to gain experience, etc. Nothing so far.
Currently lending a hand for my dad's business.
Not holding out for a dream job, just a half decent chance.
