Expenses can be a minefield. The above may help but more specific detail may be needed.Without any idea what the payslips say it's impossible to know, but a common situation would be if you incur £20 of taxable expenses the employer might pay £25 gross so that, after 20% tax, you get the ful out-of-pocket expenses back. This can look odd on payslips, especially if the expenses aren't actually paid with the normal pay run. You could get a £25 gross expenses payment and £20 net deduction - wouldn't affect the bottom line, but it needs to go through payroll for tax purposes.
