Months notice queries
Discussion
Hypothetically speaking...
If I booked a weeks holiday in advance during any given month and I ended up landing a new job an they required me to hand my notice in the beginning of the month where I'm away for a week, would I have to work an extra week, or would a weeks pay be deducted, or nothing at all?
Is the months notice purpose mainly to allow the company to find a suitable replacement or is it a requirement to work the full 4 weeks?
Also what is standard practice when giving your notice? Meeting in person followed up by letter of resignation? Do you have to go into any detail as to why you're leaving?

The notice period is usually there so that the company can prepare themselves for your impending departure - whether that's effected as a hand-over to someone else, get selected projects to a finish, time to find a replacement or whatever. In some sectors which are "sensitive" you're pretty much asked to clear your desk & leave immediately (but you get the salary payment).
Most companies don't allow holiday leave during notice periods - check the handbook.
Usual method is a simple letter saying you're giving the company notice, leaving as of X date. Say how much you've enjoyed working there but it's time to move on (i.e. don't burn any bridges) and that you'll give your best assistance during the notice period.
With regards to the new job, unless a start date was discussed at interview and agreed, given that it's 1 week difference I would speak to the new company first about pushing the start date back. If they won't budge then you'd need to speak your current HR and try and come to something mutually acceptable.
PS only hand in your notice once you've resolved the start date with the new employer - you may need to mention the holiday/arrangement you come to in your resignation letter.

Not in my experience.I've handed my notice in to 2 different employers despite having holiday leave falling during my notice period. Both employers said nothing and I was paid as usual for more holiday leave.
I always make sure the holiday leave is signed off before handing my notice in!

My dad did the same thing, and he was paid for the holiday and his resignation accepted.
Even my current employer allows holiday leave to fall inside notice period.
As said check your employee handbook & contract, & be prepared to refer back to any wording or lack of in discussion.
I left my last job in Feb & also had 2 weeks holiday booked during Feb, it had been booked since september well before the offer was on the table. There was nothing in my contract or handbook to indicate I could or couldn't take holiday during my notice period so chose to hand my notice in in Jan so that my last day coincided with the end of my holiday leave for ease (there was the possibility I could have been put on garden leave for the duration of my notice but wasn't)
My boss tried to argue I hadn't given them a months notice, he also contemplated trying to get me come back after my holiday and work another 2 weeks, I stood my ground that there was nothing to say I could not take holiday during my notice & he accepted it eventually. He even tried to make my last working day before my holiday my last day with the company which was pointless as they owed me that much holiday pay it was more than I was taking for my 2 weeks anyway.
My new company clearly state in the contract that they reserve the right to ask you to take any owed holiday during your notice period.
i've always gone into the office and had the chat & passed them the letter while in there to cover the formality

I have a contract which as far as I'm aware doesn't mention it, no handbook though.
Thanks for the advice guys
Just make sure you have your leave approved in writing/email etc (not verbal) to avoid any ....err.... issues at resignation letter time. Thanks for the advice guys

Bad move - the holiday pay would have counted as pay in lieu of notice and almost certainly been tax freeGassing Station | Jobs & Employment Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
