Joined a place a 6-7 weeks ago, ended up going abroad for 2 weeks as no one available in the UK to provide training. Presented with contract on return from those trips. Didn't notice recovery of training and further education costs on termination for any reason clause, signed it (Doh!).

Job's complete pants, want out. Am I likely to get the bill for the travel/training? Still waiting on a reply from Unite (my union).

Of course you are liable, thats why its in your contract and more so if you only have done a few weeks with them, sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear but you should have read and understood the consequences of it before you signed. You could have asked your prospective boss about it before you signed.

The only time they would be on shaky ground was say you had been there 18-24 months and that is usually classed as reasonable time with the company that they dont/can't claim as they have their money out of you.

but after a few weeks you are going to be sucking it up and repaying them.

Wouldn't the fact that you only signed the contract after completing the trip play a part?

That's the interesting issue here. It's quite a common clause but with further training on the horizon my liabilities, as such, will only increase. Had I not signed it, no doubt I would have been shown the door there and then. Catch 22 really. I'm waiting on a reply from my union rep', we'll see how it goes. It also says agrees to deductions from final salary payment to cover such expenses so if that's the extent to which they can go, fine.

I think so, he could quite resonably claim that the contract only applied to training received AFTER the contract was signed.

Be careful here though as tricksy solicitors like to think of situations like that and can put in a few extra words to cover this...

I daresay they will have written something of the sort in, but then the question arises of whether a retroactive employment contract of this sort is enforceable...
