where to start

Five years ago I gave up work in IT to look after my disabled son, this week because of facebook I find myself having to look for work and somewhere to live.
Where the hell do you start? my CV ends in 2007 but I only have IT on my CV going back nearly 20 years.
Things have moved on and I know I couldn't do IT now but I've asked around and I got laughed at when I enquired about a physical job.
I'm 40 now and finding it incredibly tough, I know it's tough out there though.
Where the hell do I go from here, education is out as I need rent.

I would make sure I tackled this on a number of fronts. I would as you say get my CV up to scratch to give me the best possible chance of success in what as you also say is a tough employment market. Despite what you perceive is a lack of employment or variety in past employment, I can confirm that you will have a host of relevant experiences and outcomes to base a good CV upon, it's just that sometimes we cannot see this ourselves.
I would then start to make contact with local employment agencies (for example: http://jobseekers.direct.gov.uk/listjob.aspx?sessi... lists a number of IT related jobs in your area), the paid voluntary sector (based upon your recent experiences, which will certainly add value to your CV) and, despite your concerns above, start some form of training to bring some skills right up to date; this need not be lengthy or expensive to start with, and in some cases there may even be funding available; see here as an example: http://www.henley-cov.ac.uk/courses/part-time-cour...

"IT" is a broad church - could you be more specific?
Even with 5 years out, how about service desk (there are still some in the UK) - process / ITIL is fairly standard and good people skills are more important. You might not need ITIL qualification but you can brush up on the principles for free.
If you are more sales focused, plenty of IT sales jobs going on a 50/50 commission basis if you want to get back into it - hunger is the key to sales
Alternatively, if you just need a job and funds, supermarket delivery is supposed to be ok - better than courier work (more realistic no. of deliveries) and I suspect they prefer a more mature driver (you won't be competing with 18 year olds)
