Ed, not in the UK but my son is Norwegian, he did a few years at a Navel Collage, and then changed his mind at 20, he paid for his own medical and offshore training, and went to Uni last september, within 3 months he had three companies offering him sponsership, so now he works offshore and goes to Uni during his leave, OK Norway is diffrent to the UK, but having the certs can't hurt,

It all depends what you want to do on the platform, Engineer - Instrument - Sparky christ you can be a Carpenter and work out here there are 101 job roles that you can apply for but you must start by having the correct qualifications.

As far as your Medicals etc they will all be covered by your employer so I wouldn't waste money having them done yourself. e.g You go out and have them done yourself but it takes you 6 months after this to find a position, that medical would mean absolutely nothing.

They wouldn't look at it as he's taken the initiative all they would be looking for is your background and you are competent to fulfil the job role.

I've worked offshore now for 9 years and now looking at getting out to work on renewable energy and spend more time with the family, but in the last 9 years it's been bloody brilliant and if your single look for posts outside of the UK...Trinidad and Tabago 4 weeks on 4 weeks off over 100k tax free..yes please!
