Ok, so I finished University in June (business & accounting 2.1) and started looking for jobs toward the end of July.

I currently am employed on a 3 month contract till the end of october in the NHS as an Assistant management accountant. I went for an interview last week at a large sheffield firm for an assistant accountant role covering maternity leave ( 9 month contract). and here in lies the problem.

Today I have an interview at the NHS in the office I work in for a full time position, I also this morning received a call saying I've been offered the job at the large sheffield firm.

SO.... Do i take the 9 month contract which doesnt include study for CIMA and the pay isnt that good. Or do I turn it down in the hope I am succesful in the interview for the permanenet position here at the NHS? There is also the possibiliy my current contract could be extended past october.

Sorry if none of this made sense, just need some advice! All decisions will have a big impact on my future as this is the start of my career.

Would it be ok to say yes to the 9 month contract but then turn it down should I hear from the NHS before I start the maternity cover?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe mention in the interview that you have been offered a contract elsewhere but that they would be your preferred choice so when could you expect to receive an answer. Not sure how best to delay the other firm though...

If you were successful with the NHS interview, and a position was offered, when would you know?

Which job would you prefer? Can you not wait before giving the other company your decision? Could you not ask the NHS that you need a prompt decision as you have another offer but would prefer this role?

You've got till the written offer comes through from the contract, plus a few days. Like the poster above said, mention it in the interview, and see if that accelerates the process. If it doesn't, ask yourself if that's a responsive enough place to work.

The other firm want a decision by dinner. So I think I'll say a preliminary yes and try force a quick decision from the NHS or gauge when theyl let me know by.

Id prefer the NHS permanent job due to being able to start CIMA straight away.

Just got a second interview offer at a second firm which is scheduled for tomorrow. Nightmare.

You're expecting the NHS to be responsive/efficient/quick? Good luck (and yes, this is from personal experience working the busines side of the NHS).

Hi.

Congratulations on the number of job offers you seem to be getting smile

I started my ACCA traineeship in the NHS (a long long time ago in a galaxy ....). Is it a "proper" trainee position (i.e. promotion in line with exam success, secondments to different departments, slotting into a management role when you qualify) or is it a permanent fixed role with "training" as a bonus? The first one's better but both are good tbh. There are a lot of opportunities to move around and always vacancies appearing so career progression can be quite fast.

Surprised that they're taking on somebody from an Agency though - the Agency fees of 25% first year salary were a big deterrent when I was there.

Hi and thanks.

No it isnt a graduate scheme, the NHS graduate scheme opens soon and I will be applying as like you so it is better. The job i've gone for is basically what I am doing at the moment as agency but in a permanent position, hence il then be entitled to study package of leave and payment of course fees.

There not taking me through the agency, it was advertised via the NHS job site and I applied, my Agency contract however does run through hays so.. not sure what the fee deal is there.
