Where to go from here?!

I'll try and cut a long story short!
I was made redundant from a reasonably well paid job in July last year. I was a Senior Architectural Technician. To be honest, at the time it was a bit of a relief as I felt it was getting a bit stale and was getting fed up of the place, was there for 11 years and fancied a change.
I set up my own company which has done ok, but is never going to get me rich by the looks of things. Over the last 6 months or so i have been looking at what other opportunities are out there. There seems to be more jobs coming up in the construction industry in general, but hardly any in the North West (local to me).
I am prepared to commute an hour or so (my last place was 5 mins down the road), but there has literally been 2 jobs in the last 6 months that have been suitable.
I feel like i am in a catch 22 situation. I don't particularly want to move away for work, but at the moment it seems my only option. I feel that if I leave it too long, then employers may see me as being 'out of touch' with working for a large developer as it has been nearly 15 months since it was in my last job, and i don't want to harm my career prospects. I have thought about short term contract work, but i have commitments around here to existing clients that i can't let down, therefore, my only options seems to be to just 'carry on', or apply for jobs all over the uk and possibly relocate.
Not sure if i am expecting a miracle answer, but just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation??

Have you tried everything to maximise what you already have? It's often easier to build on what you have than start afresh. What sector is it in and what sort of business is it? Why do you think it is not currently doing so well? What do you think it would take to turn it around to bring in a level of income that you could live on? I would always look hard at what is in front of me first; there may be a way. Good luck!10PS - you'll be meeting plenty of Mohamed's there - not sure about the mountains.
Op - can you not try to get more work from some of the nationals on a sub contract basis or even a temporary contract to tide you over? If you can make a go of your own business that must surely be the goal.

Unfortunately, I have tried everything in my power to get it to work, but i think it's just the state of the construction industry at the mo, especially in the residential sector.
Most national business are not interested for one reason or another or alraedy have people signed up for long term contracts.
