Using surveillance cameras to monitor staff?

Hi all
Without going into detail, we have an issue at work where we are now considering monitoring staff via discreet surveillance cameras. What are the rules about doing this and should we legally inform staff before doing so?

Pretty sure you need 'surveillance camera's in operation' or something to that effect, but happy to be corrected wrong
