Employer changing Car Insurance Requirements - Can they?
Discussion
As part of a friends package they can either have a compnay car or opt out and take the cash allowance.
Needless to say they opt out and take the cash - No issue.
It has long been in the Policy that they must insure the car for Social, Domestic, Commuting and business use - No Issue.
The company has just revised their company car policay and now the insurance bit states that the car must be inured for Social, Domestic,Commuting, business use and Transportation of Light Goods
We think that this will cost the employee more so can the employer do this?

The employee is in a "central management non operational" function/role and therefore it is only her and her laptop, blackberry, HHT etc
BUT, the Employer is a Nationwide Parcel Delivery Company and the suspicion is that if it all goes wrong that they want to be able to "press gang" all employees to become delivery drivers.

I suspect you will find a big difference in premium going from class 1 to 3. If it were me, I would just tell the employer to pay the additional premium directly or up the mileage rate to compenate.
Actually no. Since it is guidance only, I wouldn't do it and if ever pressed upon to carry out deliveries I would cite lack of insurance as a reason not to.
