Working offshore in mining sector

Hi everyone,
I have been offered a potential job as a technical translator working at a nickel mine in New Caladonia (French Island in the South Pacific). The job would entail a 60-hour week and be on a 10 weeks on, two weeks off basis and the contract will last about one year.
Although self-employed for four years now, I have no direct experience of working in the mining sector.
In short, the agency who contacted me about the job have asked me to propose a "day rate" for my services and I have no idea.
Has anyone worked in this sector and have you any idea of the kind of wages paid? I would be grateful for any information at all, including what an engineer or any other professional in this sector might get paid, etc.

This will be at the Goro mine. What industry are you coming from? First question for you to understand is will you be liable to local income tax. Translators are translators to a certain extent so the fact this is in the mining business will have less bearing that the fact it is a translators role albeit technial in nature. I work oil & gas, which largely pays similar to mining. I'd be thinking UK base, plus 35%, plus every hour paid. So from a UK base thats around an 85% uplift on a 60hr week. If you are then only paid whilst at Goro add a bit extra (20% to cover time off). So this brings you up to around double. This is all on a staff basis, so all life/medical/pension provisions are extra.
Don't be fooled by South Pacific island, into thinking this is some paradise loction. It's not. I know a number of people who have worked on the Goro project. None were too impressed by the place, the locals are not all friendly and have been very anti the mine.
If you leave the UK now you will need to stay out until April 2014 to avoid UK tax, is it a 12 month job or a 12 month renewable contract? If limited to 12 months push the start date back as far as you can and then stay out of the UL for the end of the 2013/2014 tax year, also on 10 and 2 you need to look at if it is worth it tax wise to come back to Uk for the off time, take upto date advice, i'm a qulified accountant but I still use PWC to do all my tax and have for 40 years it cost less the 300 pound a year, people say its epensive but I've never had a problem anywhere in the world so I think its worth it.
we pay (agian Oil and Gas) about 1000US$ a day for technical authors, including accom, so assuming all found food local travel and accom, I'd say you need to be looking at around 100 to 110 K pounds, before local tax.
