Hi guys,
Been lurking awhile first time posting, looking for any advice on a career change. Been caught in a dilemma for months now and thought, what the hell why not seek advice and where better than PH. I'm currently a mechanic/fitter in the army (royal electrical and mechanical engineers). I'm making the transition into
Civvy street next year and although I've had offers from places like the oil rigs I want to remain in the automotive sector. My current dilemma is I have very limited experience in the
"civilian" sector I've mostly worked on armour and hgv's. I've been told the average mechanic earns around 20k on civvy street which is less than I'm on now which doesn't appeal. But I understand there's a lot more money in hgv's and plant mechanics. Anyway the two options I've came up with are chancing my luck Trying to find a position as a HGV mechanic (drawback being I only have a NVQ level 2) or going back to college and completing a HNC in automotive engineering over 10 month and finding a better position from there.

I would jump at a chance on the 'rigs. Good money (which is what work is all about) and I'd imagine you would get to see a lot too.
I'm 25. Tbh I enjoy it a lot, I love working on cars and I see it as a stable career. I know a lot of guys who have worked on the rigs but never as a lengthy career. Why do you want to remain in the automotive sector?

Don't underestimate the other qualities besides qualifications. Presentation, CV, research on the company you're applying to. Plenty to work on during resettlement. Where are you based ATM.
I was based in Paderborn, but now in Edinburgh. I do see plenty of work going at the moment but most require level 3. mikecassie said:
I worked as an agricutural mechanic and I reckon we were paid the least out of cars and truck mechanics. That was 15 years ago so maybe things things have wised up a bit. But saying that, we did get shed loads of overtime during the summer to help our year end wages.
