I'm asking on behalf of someone else.

Their shifts get announced sometimes the day before they are rota'd to be on.

He is contracted to do 20 hours but at the moment is doing about 32, which he doesn't mind too much. However when the rota was put out this week he was due to be working the next day and couldn't make it. So let the manager know, who then said if he doesn't want to do the shift he can not bother coming in again. Which seems a bit unfair.

Is there any employment law that says notice to do a shift must be given a certain time frame before hand?

As he missed a lecture to go to work.

I know all involved and it is exactly as I said, not just one side. It is for a restaurant /bar.
