PLC (Police Law and Community) course

Good evening PH.

Just wondering if anyone on here has done, or doing a PLC course?

It appears that a few Police Forces are requiring you to do this before you can apply, so looking into it.

If anyone has any advice on it I would love to hear it. How you are finding it. Is it worth doing etc.

I know it doesn't guarantee you a job sadly.

Have you done any kind of work relating to police work? Special or PCSO? I ask because the force is going through its biggest test in decades and morale is rock bottom. I'd hate to think that you spent a fortune on qualifications only to join and hate it. I would wait on what the next proposals for recruitment arrested before getting on a course which really doesn't give you an edge against other candidates using the current system.

I've been a Special for over two years. I love it at the moment, and 100% want to do it as a career.

From what I've read, Hants and Sussex will only be considering people who have taken this course (plus doing the usual assessment centre), so I'm guessing that more forces will start doing this as well.

Good to hear that you're not going in blind. If down where you live thats what they're doing, then it sounds like a useful thing to have. I just know that from the old way of doing things, provided your paper sift was good enough, everything else was judged on the assessment centre and medical. Obviously hurdling the paper sift is probably the most difficult part of it all.

The PLC will cost you £900, provided by Dave's favourite companies. That's before you've even completed your application form.

More of Dave's plans are that you will have to continue to pay for your own training when actually in the Police. If you get injured and cannot pass a fitness test you will be made redundant.

I cannot recommend a job (it will no longer be a career) in the Police. Think VERY carefully before blowing vast amounts of money.

On the plus side, you have had some experience as a special now at least, although I've found where I work the Specials (and some of them are very "special") don't pick up the sh*tty end of the job i.e. files, paperwork, CPS memos, meetings about meetings etc and when they join the Regulars they get very disillusioned.

I honestly would no longer recommend a career in the police to anyone. If you have enough about you to proactively look for a training course, don't waste your motivation and enthusiasm on the police service, they really will not thank you for it.
