Background:- I work for a small subcontract electronics manufacturer, as a Purchasing Manager. We have been having a few issues internally and the MD refuses to listen or let us put into place any resolutions. Be it staff changes or process changes. He is a constant road block. We have had 2 external people come in to advise/do business palns and he has ignored them also. As you can imagine this is very frustrating.

This has prompted me to look for alternative employment. For which I am waiting on a response from a company today I have been through 3 stages of interview and they went well - fingers crossed.

The company has seen a sharp down turn over the last 3 months and the upshot of it is we are going to have to make 9 people redundant.

Now my MD got wind of my imminent departure and so being expensive to keep and cheap to get rid of (I've been there 18months) I'm top of the list.

So If I get the offer and hand in my notice I get nothing, If they make me redundant I get £500 ish. The later is preferred for me obviously.

So if I get offered this job, I hope I do. What shall I do? Keep it under my hat and wait untill I get the official redundancy?

Or shall I put in for voluntary today?

I'm a tad confused.

Ahh sorry

I wouldn't have been made redundant had it not been for this.

The production manager would have gone instead (right solution) but news of my immenent departure lead to my MD taking the easy option.

If I get the other job, all is well. If I don't I have put myself under extra pressure.

I wouldn't worry about it.
If you get the other job then £500 is neither here nor there and if you don't get it, there is a fair chance he wont sack you

Not worth blowing a new job opportunity for the sake of losing £500.

If it was £5,000 it would be different.

Also would the MD really base his decision on who he makes redundant on who is likely to be going anyway?? Doesnt seems a logical way to approach downsizing

From what we've been told the MD is anything but logical.

Also at 18months you are entitled to £0 redundancy so he may chose to get rid of you without paying you anything!

You better hope you get the job! Because by the sounds of it your fked why would you let it get out you were looking elsewhere without a guaranteed start date!!! Got to be career suicide.

Small company (7 people in the office) and paper thin walls.

I'm past caring now. I don't think I could work here much longer anyway. It has to be the single most frustrating place I have ever worked.

Not really career suicide?! More of a minor inconvenience.
