As above, I have a moral dilemma. This month I have been overpaid by £443.98.

Do I tell the boss or keep it quiet?

Tell them now rather than get in trouble when they realise.
But do so in a cheery way something along the lines of "Thanks for the £443 pay rise" and await their reaction. (Depends on what sort of boss you have got, results may vary.)

I'd tell them because they will probably notice and deduct it from your wages when you least want them to.

Just me of course - others may say keep quiet.

Tell them and look honest. Would you want to jeapordise future career progression for the sake of a few hundred quid?

Tell them.

Your job is worth more than that amount of money.

It's a criminal offence to keep money that has been paid to you in error. Best to let them know.

Nope, my boss isn't that generous!

I know the right thing to do, but part of you always wonders "if I keep quiet...."

lol. Is it a small firm? If so then mention it.

If not then I would put it to one side ready to pay back if asked.

The downside to keeping quiet is that when they spot the error, and it's fairly likely they will, your integrity will then be in question for not mentioning it.

Of course, you could claim you didn't notice, but then that calls into question your attention to detail.

Just tell them. It's the better option all round.

You are aware of the legal position?

It's very small. 4 during the summer, about 38 during winter. The 440 quid is about 30% too much!

In that case I would ask the boss if he meant to pay you a £400 odd bonus?

If you keep it and say nothing and they find out, you're pretty much done for in your current job. Say something, they'll mark you down as an honest chap with integrity they can trust - complete no brainer.

Speak to your boss and thank him for the extra money. Tell him you appreciate his generosity and it will make things easier financially for you this Christmas as you had been worrying about it.

Legal and moral bases covered and it'll be up to him to ask for it back.

Moral dilemma resolved.

I came into work this morning and mentioned it to the accountant whilst outlook was opening. As I was mentioning it I noticed an email from her saying I had been overpaid sent an hour earlier.

Shame, I fancied a nice little bonus

I was overpaid by a few thousand £ when I was working in a factory when I was 18. I did tell them but I also told them my unauthorised overdraft had eaten it up so I wasn't in a position to pay it back. It wasn't true, but I felt like it was a good tactic to avoid the upcoming redundancies. Ended up paying it back £50 a week and pretty much guaranteed my job for that time period...
