Potential job offer could get me out of this mire...

Now I might be getting ahead of myself but I'm in the following situation and need some advice on best thing to do. This is a new account I've created to keep things anon!

I've been working at a company on a contract basis for about 6 months. Originally I was supposed to be contract and then made permanent, but no word from my boss.

I have to trek into work for 3 days and work from home 2, although my boss is getting more demanding about me being in all the time (even though this makes simple things like dentists/hospital appointments impossible as I'm so far from home). I don't really have the salary to afford to travel in all the time (£20 train tickets and expensive on petrol) so this gets on my nerves. Also he seems to use the perm position as a carrot.

I feel uncomfortable working for him, as he seems like a sly kind of person. Friendly to everyone else, but strange around me. I really don't trust him.

I've been looking for other jobs, closer to home and I've got an interview on Thursday 13th. The new role will be with people that I don't know, but even the people I know at my current place I don't really speak to as I'm being hounded by my boss constantly.

I think if (assuming the interview goes well)they offer me the job (better known company £5k more a year, 15mins away, 6months temp to perm) I should accept.

I've really tried to make this current job work and in this climate, I'm worried about paying the mortgage and so on, so took the job without thinking too much. Currently I get up at 5.30am get home at 6.20pm all for an ordinary wage. I'm knackered all the time (I'm st at early mornings) and the role is too far from my GFs to drive, so I never see her in the week.

Also my boss told me on tuesday that he'd have 2 weeks off at xmas and I'd get xmas day and boxing day off... And that's it. If he'd run it past me before hand and I'd agreed, fine, but he keeps putting me in these kinds of positions. He's obsessed with doing a good job which is fine, but he expects stupid levels of commitment from me. I'm fed up!

I'm not missing anything am I? If they wanted me to stay the'd surely offer me a perm contract? Any other views/opinions?

I'm genuinely not sure what your dilemma is here mate.

A non-perm position with an unpleasant environment working for someone you can't trust and traveling a distance you struggle with or a non-perm position round the corner for more money.

Life's too short to hate what you do everyday (wish I could make that advice stick for me).

Have to say I don't see the problem

They are treating you like st, and you potentially have a way out and a better job

Whats not to like?

Just don't hand in your notice until you have the new job confirmed, contract in place etc

As soon as the job offer lands tell them you can start in a week. Then have the camera phone handy when you hand in your very short notice (you're only contract after all) just before your boss's Christmas break
