Not as much of a joke as how it is spent fking wasted.

And yes.
I cry too.
Got that right, i'm going to sign on now, and take it easy for a bit. Slowly pinch back every penny they've taken from me.

Seriously, what incentive do I have to find a slightly higher paying job, when tax just takes me back to where I was? How is it fair to tax someone 20% on their 15k, and someone else 20% on their 35k??? How is that fair? What's the point? I was chuffed as I found a better job at the end of 2012 with higher pay. Now, despite my enjoyment of the job, I feel like what's the point? Stupid fking rat race. I need to be earning some serious moola before i'm actuall very much better off, thanks to 20% income tax.

So income tax should go up with the amount you earn so that everybody earns £15k after tax? Where's the incentive to work harder if that's the case?

No i didnt say that. Your tax should increase in increments, not a flat 20% for the lowest fking earners and those on above average.

Is that hard to grasp?

How does earning £35k and paying 20% take you back to where you were paying 20% on £15k?

I know that's not quite what you said, but if you were on £15k paying 20% and are now on a higher wage, still paying 20% then you will be taking home an extra 80p in the pound on every extra £ you make?? (I'm ignoring NI as this is about income tax only). So how are you "back to where you were"?

You're either misunderstanding your situation or have said it incorrectly above?

Why do you think someone that earns more, should pay more? You get as much out of sociely as a middle or high earner. When I first went through the 40% barrier it was through over time, ie working more hours. How is that fair?

Do rants about tax etc belong in a supposedly "sensible" forum like "Jobs and Employment Matters"?

I thought the finance related forums were for people who were asking for advice or had queries on specific issues - not for general incoherent rants.

Grow up!

Why on earth should anyone pay a higher percentage tax rate, regardless of what they earn?

Let's assume we had a really simple tax system for a moment, where nobody paid tax on the first £10k they earn, then paid tax at 20% on everything over and above that.

If you're on £15k, you pay tax on £5k for a total of £1,000. If you're on, £150k, you pay tax on £140k for a total of £28k.

It that £150k taxpayer taking 28 times more than you are out of the system? No. Yet because he earns more, he's paying 28 times more tax than you are, and that's before you start trying to increase the percentage over 20%.

If you want to look at something which really is unfair about the tax system, start looking at the 40% tax bracket!

Not to mention the 50% tax bracket.

Not to mention the marginal rate of over 60% tax that 50% tax payers pay as their personal allowances are withdrawn.

Not to mention Employee's NI.

Not to mention Emoployer's NI.

And that's only taxation on earned income.

Im confused, is the op saying that tax should be a flat rate? ie we all pay £2k tax a year or that the more the earn the higher % you should pay?

I believe that tax should be a flat rate, but dont believe in a million years with the governments waste that it would ever work. I think the tax system in the UK is a mess and needs simplyfying and a overhaul, we should be taxed on the services we use not on some fictitious made up % plucked out of thin air.

I'm confused...

Is the OP saying he wants the percentage to rise with earnings? But surely then he would be paying even more tax?

I suspect danjama has about this much --> <-- of a grasp on how income tax is actually figured out.

The number of people I have met who don't want a pay rise because they'll get taxed 40% on their whole income is worrying.
Then there are people who don't understand that the 1st part of your income is tax free as well.

Because it's calculated and taken at a flat rate across the year from their pay, the concept of how it works evades many people it seems. Perhaps if it was taken at the rate for the amount they have earned so far this year more people would grasp it.

A questioned for the informed here.

If you're on £15k pa, you would pay tax on £5,560, so £1,112.
At that level of income are you entitled to any support, tax credits etc etc? ( assuming no children)

I'm just curious what the net contribution would be to the robbing government of someone on £15k.
That's for 2013/14.

For 2012/13, on a salary of £15,000, your Income Tax charge would be £1,379.00 (£15,000 less personal tax allowances of £8,105.00 at 20%)

You would also pay Class 1 National Insurance of £888.96 (£15,000 minus £7,592 at 12%).

The total amount paid over to HMRC by an employee on a Gross Salary of £15,000 is actually £2,267.16. (Tax £1,379.00 NI £888.96).

The employer would also pay an additional £1,036.66 NI.

Therefore, a Gross Salary of £15,000.00 generates £3,303.82 for the government.

This equates to an effective "tax" rate on £15,000 of 22.03%.

It shoukld always be taken into account as it has become an increasingly important part of the "tax" take of the government from employees and employers.

The government HOPE that people wil ignore it, of course, as it isn't officially called a "tax".

But that is exactly what it is and should never be ignored.

I'm not quite sure what he's arguing! He seems to be saying that he should only pay low tax, but the rich (which in this case seems to be anyone with an income higher than his at any given point in his life) should pay more so that he doesn't have to.
