As per title, I got a verbal warning, for something silly, but that isn't what my question is.

I'm applying for a new job, if they ask for a reference from my current job, will they say that I have had a verbal warning? I've been told it lasts for 8 weeks, if they ask after this 8 weeks, does it then go from my file, or can they still tell them about it?

I'm not bothered by it, its a stupid reason, and nothing serious, but would like to know just incase.

Thanks smile.

Highly unlikely.

Will most likely just confirm you worked there from ? To ? And that will be about it.

On the other hand, they might. If the question on the reference is 'does the employee have any current disciplinary issues?', it would be legitimate for them to answer honestly if it was still within the eight weeks of the warning being issued.

Prospective employers shouldn't be asking for references though until they are making an offer, so depends how quickly you get through the application / interview process...

I very much doubt it will be within the 8 weeks (I wish it would, been waiting three years for an application!).

there is no black and white answer. Most firms only give factual references. Salary, dates worked, confirm job title.

There is very very little discussion of aptitude for the job or attitude in references these days.

The emphasis here should be on 'verbal' warning. Therefore unlikely to be considered of importance by your referees.

probably be fine.

I would love to say it was because I was caught shagging in the walk in freezer...sadly it was for forgetting to sign the van log book once my shift was over.

Well i know its important for employers to keep track of how was using vehicles and when etc - but a verbal warning for failing to sign the vans log book rolleyes.

Quite what they were hoping to achieve is beyond me - to me it just sounds like a very impressive way of completely annoying a staff member for now good reason whatsoever that i can see banghead.

If they know you drove the van - what the censored is wrong with coming up to the employee and saying Ki3R - just letting you know - you forgot to sign the van log book - just get it signed when you get a chance - okay. Youd go and sign the log book - and everyone lives happily ever after.

Ah but maybe they have and this is the 10th time he forgot? Line in the sand maybe?

I messed it up when I first started (August), but since then been fine. To be honest, I'm not too fussed about the reason, although I had to bite my tongue VERY hard when I found out.

I would probably just be honest about it to new employer, it's hardly a hanging offence and displaying honesty over a genuine mistake will probably win you more points that you are honest and open than a minor admin mistake.

Had to laugh, another member of staff forgot to sign the book a couple of times in the same week, he was just told to sign it there and then.

I get a verbal warning...seems fair right?
