How do you deal with this?
Discussion
We have a colleague,a dim half wit,i used to give the benefit of the doubt to,he will lie at any chance to protect himself. He will also tittle/tattle any information which drops anyone else in the s""t. I was ill last week with a reaction to antibotics i was on. On my return to work my manager infered i was not ill i had been seen at a football match on TV! It turns out a joke about this was made in the office,f"""""t decides to pass the info on to our manager as a serious report. Surely making malicous allegations in the workplace is a serious issue.
Discuss it directly with him.
Tell him to his face, if he makes comments which affect your reputation, especially to your manager then he is going to make life very difficlut for himself.
Ask him to apologise to you, explain that you don't think this is a professional way to behave and that if he does it again, you will raise a formal grievance against him.
Don't make the mistake of taking it to your manager, to easy for them to not do anything, as that makes for an easy life (for them)

At which point he will go back to the manager to say you threatened him to keep his mouth shut the next time you throw a sicky!Tell him to his face, if he makes comments which affect your reputation, especially to your manager then he is going to make life very difficlut for himself.

Not a route I would follow.
Where is the threat?
I guess it depends on how you deliver it. No need to push him up against a cupboard with your fist in his tie.
A calm conversation over a coffee, say you didn't appreciate it and ask him not to do it again. Chance is are he traded a quick laugh without thinking about the consequences of his words.
Manages prefer it when you try to resolve your issues yourself.

Well, that depends on whether he was actually at the match or not. The OP hasn't made that clear, but as AIUI, the manager is under the impression that he was there. If he wasn't there, then he needs to correct that impression.I might stoop to not mentioning it to anyone at all.. I might then however slip him some duff info over coffee.. Tell him NOT to repeat it - e.g. the managers spouse is leaving them or having an affair.. The Director's son is in prison for xyz.. The manager is applying for jobs with the competition...
They might tittle tattle to the wrong person and eventually things will turn bad for them..
But you sound more like a fist in face person from the anger in your first post!!
