Dental Therapist hr rate.
Discussion
There are no nationally agreed pay scales for Therapists (same as the rest of the dental team (Dentists, Hygienists, Technicians & Nurses)), therefore it's market forces in the private sector. In the NHS, whilst there are the AfC pay scales, where she enters can be at the discretion of the employing NHS Trust (or FT). Assuming she's a member of the BSDHT http://www.bsdht.org.uk/membership.html she can benchmark her experience and qualifications against their recommended pay scales and use that as a bargaining tool come pay review time. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the reply.
She has a chance of a couple of days a week in a surgery but at £15 ph . Her other couple of days employment pay her £25ph.
You are right with the market forces statement , but sometimes it seems like its a big race to the bottom, so to speak!
I'm in the building trade and prices really are at rock bottom at the moment
Thanks again

In my humble opinion, she is suffering from the over supply of Hygienists and Therapists. This is compounded by the fact that most were heading to private practice just as everyone started to think hard about their discretionary spending. This could be the market just correcting itself. She has a chance of a couple of days a week in a surgery but at £15 ph . Her other couple of days employment pay her £25ph.

I don't know if you're still around? A really good place for support is www.hygienist.co.uk
The oversupply is terrible in the profession at the moment, the job market is so dry, which is also forcing wages down. Regionally the salary can be hugely different too.
£15 is quite low, but my advice is take the work, get some experience, get up to speed, and always keep an eye out. Go to the courses at the Deaneries, make an awesome CV (Rog
)- I did a covering letter and had cheapy cards made up with my contact details.
Network, network, network.
Gumtree had a few jobs oop North recently.
If I can help at all drop me a PM. I go to Uni in Preston once a month

She has 4 days full time at the moment 2 good days, 2 not so good days, meaning she only gets paid for the hours she works. So if there are any spaces in the day due to patients failing or just not filled then no pay!
Sometimes coming out with less pay than the nurses.
Do you teach at Preston Uni, how is it going?
Hiya! Work was so quite last 6 months I decided to top up my Diploma to a BSc, just another 15 months to go
Is she on % age? Or hourly? Does the contract have anything in about FTA's?
Can also fill white space being useful.... setting up a hyg recall list, spending extra time with patients to explain why they need further treatment, marketing herself, is she trained to do whitening? special offers? kids club in the holidays? CPD online?
Why aren't patients booked in? Are the principal and associates referring? If not, why not? Maybe have a meeting with them to discuss? Make sure they're referring appropriately and not just "for a clean"
It is soul destroying though, I've been there, I'd only just left the RAF so I didn't know much about civvie practice at the time (I still don't think I do!)
The hyg forum has some of the brightest clinicians around, if she isn't already a member

Interesting timing - my Mrs currently has an application in with one of the dental hospitals to start training as a hygienist. The finances of it were always looking very borderline but this and other similar stuff we have come across recently elsewhere will probably tip the balance to knock it on the head. Two years off work to come out into a flooded labour market in tough financial times is starting to look like a bad idea. Especially as seeing a Hygienist is generally regarded as optional and not cheap.
Whilst wages will always find their own level and obviously are, I can't help feel some of the problem here is down to the greed of the dentists/practices. Where she works as a qualified Dental Nurse she gets paid £8.50ph, not a lot for such a responsible job. The Hygienist only gets paid £15.00ph, the 30min slots are charged at £45.00, they are booked end on with no gaps and she gets paid by the hour. So she gets £15.00ph, leaving the practice with the other £75.00ph. She has to take it because there is little work out there and she usually ends up with half days, plenty of travel time and costs to come out of that.
According to the tutors in the hospital the Therapist add on is a waste of time unless you get real lucky with jobs, generally it doesn't pay. Ten/twenty years ago it would have been a very good thing to do financially, times have changed.
What hasn't changed are some of the strokes the practice pulls to stiff the NHS and going by what others she trained with say it isn't much different elsewhere. If you wonder where all the money in the NHS goes you need look no further than some of the ever so caring dentists doing NHS work. Unemployed sir, NHS paying, no problem, please sit down, I will "look after" you, I have plenty of units to use up......................

I wouldn't knock it on the head, but you have to be in the profession for more than just the money, because you can burn out very quickly unless you have passion for oral health promotion.
Regionally things are very different, there's usually a fair bit of work in the south east, that's how I ended up here. I have a friend moving to Shetland in June because he just couldn't get work in derby area.
Money wise the going rate is usually £25-40 depending on experience........
Therapy is predicted to pick up after the new NHS contract is introduced. I'd love to work in community but they only want therapists.
It pains me to say this, but its also a good profession if you have/want kids, because of the flexible working hours.
The military are also ceasing training hygiensts and I predict they wil employ civvies, although the salary is pretty low again, but there are benefits like free gym and nice working environments and nice patients

My mrs took 5 years off paid work to study full time (2 yrs college access course then 3 yrs BSC) with 2 very small children! It has cost us a small fortune when you add it up.
The problem IMO is that the Dentists are not yet aware that a therapist can make them big money!
Tomorrow she will do at least 3 filings per hour on an 8 hr day, mostly NHS. Get paid £25 per hr
If I was a dentists I'd be employing Therapists and referring as many patients as I could get through the door, to them to increase turnover!
I think a big push for preventative treatment and advise needs to be pushed in this country for oral health, similar to the excess alcohol or stopping smoking campaine has reduced related diseases.
The body's that support the Therapist / Hyginist seem pretty useless at promoting themselves into employment and making a case for themselves in the eyes of the Dentists. ( who even came up with the name Therapist!!)
Maybe when it's proved to the government that the way dentists are paid at the moment is daft then the practice owners may have more 'freedom' to expand their surgerys a little?
Rant over!
I'd look at something with potential nhs employment if I were you!
Good luck
