Best route into nursing...

I know there are lots of resources online to access, but I also know there are a lot of untapped resources and you can't beat someone who has personal experience, so, to anyone who knows anything about this here goes.

I'm 26 yrs old, recently moved back to the UK after spending a few years overseas, and want to change my career. I want to be a Nurse! My planned employment area would be Emergency room nursing. After been on the UCAS website there are around 15 different nursing courses, and the general ones, i.e. Adult nursing, Registered Nursing etc don't seem to have any specific information about what fields they can lead to.

I guess it's easier to ask someone who has recently done it or currently doing their diploma/degree. If it helps I'm in the Lincs area and looking at the courses via Lincoln/Notts universities.

Do you have any experience of ED nursing? Or have you spoken to people that do it? They always seem the most stressed nurses to me . Afraid I can't help with the courses side of things.

There is one way into Nursing - successfully completing a NMC approved pre-registration course via an approved Higher Education Institution ...

All pre-registration courses in the UK are now at least honours degree level, so you will need Level 3 qualifications for entry as well as level 2 Maths and English . There are some Post -grad pre registration courses but they often require you to have a life sciences of social sciences degree so you can APL material.

there are 4 pre-registration 'branches' Adult ( 'General' in the pre HE days), Mental health, Children and Learning Disabilities. Other degree / post graduate courses in Nursing require registration for entry .

The majority of Emergency Department Nurses are Adult / General Nurses, although there are some who are solely Children's Branch registered ( mainly in Paeds only EDs)

All the best jobs are stressful imo But, as my original post says, it's a career change so no nursing experience no.

I have all my level two qualifications, and some level 3, but not what meets the FULL UCAS requirements, I have people who have managed to have these requirements waived in view of their age/life experience/work experience, it tends to differ with the university and how full the course is going to be. I'm aware of a one yr 'access to nursing course' which is pre Hons Degree, so maybe if they won't waive the entry requirements then I could do that?

You've obviously done your basic research on this, as you say how flexible or otherwise individual Unis are is a rule unto themselves ... and access to nursing is a good route if you don;t have 'enoughh' level 3
