Left a job to return to and old employer

About 7 months ago i left my first job of 7 years where I served my apprenticeship to go to a bigger company. It was a no brainier with a £12500 pay rise for the same job as a electrical engineer working shifts on a production line. I had settled in fine and although it was a lot busier I was coping with it fine. Then out of the blue my old boss contacted me around 6 weeks ago to offer me a days based job at the factory where I worked for 4 years doing my apprenticeship. (i then moved to another factory after this which is where i worked till i left 7 moths ago) that was to be part of a new team where I thought it would be the same sort of role but on days and the money was only a slight drop but would be Monday to Friday days no nights. I felt flattered by the offer as he came to my house personally to tell me about the job etc and tbh I knew the money for days was fantastic for my line of work and didn't come round often so I took it. I left with the blessing of my boss and he said that if it didn't work out he would have me back if it was possible. Now after 2 weeks at the new job I am having big regrets. I left for a days job and two weeks in I have already been asked to cover shift twice including a week of nights at another factory which I left 7 months ago as they are short staffed. I also have found out I have been misled by the job discription that he told me and one week in 3 it turns out i will have to do a site service engineer role which when I was offered the job I was told that I would only have to know the basics to cover for holidays. This along with other things have left me in a bit of a state tbh not sleeping properly, pissed off etc. Now some of this new job I have taken would probably allow me to progress in my career but having been back two weeks I feel that I was happy on the tools going to work for my shift then going home and forgetting about it until my next shift. In this role it seems that I am going to have to be showcasing to everyone what are department is doing etc and I really think this is not me. I'm only 24 and don't know what I want out of my career yet. Now I have emailed my old boss to find out what the possibility of me going back would be already and he is looking into it. My question is has any one had anything similar to this and do you think I am been too hasty in emailing my old boss. The job been not what I expected and the shift cover already after 2 weeks is what has been my biggest concern.

That was what I got when I moved companies seven months ago. I actually took a 2.5k drop for the days based role i am in now that I recently started.

Are you contracted to only work days? If so then you should be able to say no to covering shifts, although I know it's hard to just say no and managers always put you under a lot of pressure to cover shifts when they need you to

Just go back to the second job if they'll have, you'll be happier. You'll have some bridges to build though, but you should be OK.

Stick in there, sounds as though you just feel out of your comfort zone. They obviously think highly of you, talk to your new boss, get some reassurance and 6 months a year down the line you will be looking back wondering what the problem was.

Yep this for me too. Speak to your boss, say, you re-hired me so I guess you must think I can do this stuff, but since I have come back I have found these issues, here are my suggested solutions...

As for showcasing the work, I think this is a good idea, chance to learn a new skill and to move up. Stick in there, but do let them know that you need support.

Cheers for the advice guys. I definitely do feel out of my comfort zone ill agree but there is definitely something else bothering me, when I first left seven months ago I never felt this, I think I have taken the job and already feel it isn't the job for me! Weather I wait and see is the question? I know my old job is there with a possibility to go back into it and if someone else takes it and I still don't enjoy this one then im left looking again at a totally new place and would probably feel like this all over again haha.
