Job offered, then taken away

After applying for a role within the company I work for I was pleased to be offered the post. I accepted however just if there was any chance of bettering the salary slightly.
This had to be checked with HR, and I would be called back. I was asked if the acceptance was hinged on the outcome as to the salary increasing. I said no it wasn’t. I am very happy and the job is more important to me.
3 days later I am now told that as the amount of roles available has been reduced by one, I will not be offered the role anymore purely because I was the only one who asked for more and in the time it took for them to get back to me the headcount went down by one.
I think this is unfair and that the candidates should be re-assessed for the positions available. If it were down to who was the strongest candidate, then fine but it was down to my asking that question around salary.

I reckon your ship has sailed, mate. You can ask for reassessment all you like but as you will not have access to the other candidate's applications etc. what are you going to do when you're not picked after it? All you will have done is waste peoples' time and your card will no doubt be marked accordingly.
I'll re-apply if something comes up in due course. Just feel hard done by.

if there are 4 roles and the other 3 all signed the contracts whilst you are waiting for your salary query to come through, then they reduce the 4 roles to 3 and since the other 3 had already signed... then my friend you are sI don't think i've done anything wrong by asking if there was a possibility of more more money as that is the only time you can ask that quesiton, not further down the line.

t out of luck.I had something similar happen to me due to personal circumstances that I couldnt take a role in Feb but could in June, when June came round there was no more chance of a job as there was job freeze on.
Chalk it up to bad luck and move on.
My experience of how headcounts are provisioned are very odd. I know that I was originally employed very quickly due to to a small opening in the company window. I also know that when we were hiring to expand the team, my supervisor kept dithering too much on deciding who to employ and the headcount offering has closed. The goalposts seem to move very quickly.
