Ok bare with me, this may sound odd

In my work place some doors are controlled with keys, pin coded locks & some you need a coded swipe card to open

As part of my work I am required to regularly (at least once a month) work in a different building

Previously I have had codes or keys to get through the doors I need to

I have recently started in a different building, where my request for a card, key or code has been declined
So now I have to find an available colleague to ask, like a school child asking their teacher, everytime I want to get to the bathroom

Does anyone know if this is a health & safety issue?

I had this problem too at an old job. The main building, with the toilet, shut an hour earlier than our dept. The only way to go was to run down the yard, unlock the main, do the alarms and then the same in reverse, while walking back across the cluttered yard in the pitch black.

Not great when you're suffering from stomach flu. Yes, I did once have to go home in just my overalls. whistle

Each time you need to go, phone your boss and ask him to let you through the doors.

When he's unavailable, phone his boss.

No real advice for you except to say - i feel the frustration at the epic stupidity of the people in this different building.

Been on work experience when doing a couple of courses over the years - and never had any issues with getting access codes or anything i needed to go where ever i needed to go.

Can't understand why you can't be given the access codes/keys or cards you need.

Is the "different building" part of the same company you work for - or is it a customer or something.

Personally - id look into arguing the point that your having to delay trips to the toilet for longer then neccessary and argue the health part of health and safety on that point.

I don't think that having to hold on and not go to the toilet when you need to on an ongoing basis is good for long term health - but im no doctor.

I'm guessing it would be a H&S issue if you had to use your waste paper bin smile

Why not give you full access to the building? Have you done something wrong?

Thanks for the replies

Same firm, just a different building

Good idea using a waste paper basket, that would soon make them give me access lol

After some further digging this morning it appears that the person I approached either couldn't be bothered, didn't know how to give me access or had the wrong end of the stick from their boss.

I was speaking to the overall boss a moment ago and when I asked him he said sure not a problem
So I will soon be able to celebrate going to the loo when I need to lol

A couple of years ago I would have called "Big Jessie" on this.

Having had a few uretic (sp) stents since then I would say, person dependant, it is actually. One of those bad boys means that when you have to go, you have to go and that is about 30 times a day...

Glad to see it is sorted now though!
