Advice regarding Automotive Engineering

Currently in year 11, doing my GCSE's. Right now the plan is to study Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Maths and Critical Thinking at a Level, a it open up the most doors for me.
Currently I want to do medicine at uni, yes, 5 years at uni are a PITA but IMO it's worth it, because a stable, secure and well paid job is hard to find these days, and i'm taking on appropriate work experiences to help my uni application. (i@d actually enjoy it as well, not being forced/pressured into the profession)
However, it's rather hard to get onto a med course at uni these days, and i wouldn't like to lay place all my eggs i one basket, so to speak.
I was looking at Automotive Engineering courses and I couldn't really find much regarding job opportunities once the course is complete.
So, are there any Automotive Engineers around who can tell me a little about what kind of career paths you could take after completing the course, and what kind of salary etc. to expect?

Hi, hope I can help. I've just graduated from a BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering course and I'm currently still looking for a job. I'd say 2/3 of my class have secured a job in something to do with the automotive sector a couple getting on the graduate scheme at JLR. These graduate schemes with the large automotive manufacturers (most in the midlands: JLR, Aston, Bentley, Mclaren ...etc.) are what most graduates try for with good prospects and around a £25k salary. As you could imagine places are limited and competition is high but its possible to get a place within 2 years of graduating. Apart from graduate specific jobs I'd say its fairly limited in terms of job opportunities as most want around 3 years experience for entry level/contract jobs. As far. As advice goes I'd suggest you follow what you enjoy most as in today's climate I'd say job opportunities are even across most fields. Hope this helps.
Did Mech Eng myself - Auto's very similar, just more specialised towards actual automotive applications/ systems (and it therefore appeared to be more 'intense' as a degree at my place, as you still have gain a very broad understanding of engineering before being able to apply it in more detail!)
As for career paths, it opens the doors for pretty much learning the ropes in any area of the industry (e.g. design, research, project management, technical sales, manufacturing etc.) - as well as anything requiring 'numerate' grads - finance, management consulting etc.
I chose to go into the Auto industry for both my sandwich year and upon graduation. Salaries are 'modest' TBH - obviously it depends on heavily on whether you choose to go into management, become an leading expert in a critical field etc. but I wouldn't pick a career in auto if you wanted to earn a fortune and/ or didn't absolutely love cars.
Another problem is that you can't always choose where to live and then find the job as with other careers - it tends to be the other way round... Several times (as I've got older and more settled) I've been faced with a dilema as to whether to stay put or move hundreds of miles to take on what may be the next logical step in my career!
(I'm not meaning to sound negative about it: I absolutely love Auto, and when I look at other more financially rewarding industries/ roles I could have gone into for what appears the same amount of effort/ skills and responsibilities, the truth is that most would have driven me round the bend with boredom!)
