Resignation Letter - Messy departure
Discussion
After 5 months of looking for new employment elsewhere I went back for a 2nd interview last Friday and was offered a position with a fantastic company. The best part is I was offered the position above the post I applied for! Now time to sort out my resignation letter after doing my bosses job for him over the past year while he jaunted around the world.
No niceties as he was an incompetent t
t, this was further emphasised by the fact he sent on a Personal, Private and Confidential email onto a fellow non-management team member which was then subsequently forwarded onto another team. So unprofessional, especially for a company with a global identity. This was highlighted in a scathing email noting his unprofessionalism that I sent on Wednesday upon the reply from my original - I have received no reply. I cc'd in his boss also. So a little messy, but it's come at the right time.
How does this read?
Company add etc.
Xxxxx,
Re: Resignation
Please accept this letter as immediate notice of my resignation.
Under the terms of my contract, I am required to give 4 weeks notice; therefore my last working day will be Xxxx XX Xxxx. Be assured that I will do all I can to cooperate the smooth transfer of my responsibilities before leaving.
Regards

A pet hate of mine is resignation letters that give unnecessary information.
They are a notice of you terminating a contract. They are not a means of thanking people or re-assuring people - that's a discussion to be had in person IMO.
So, I'd leave it at:
Dear Employer
Please accept this letter as immediate notice of my resignation.
Under the terms of my contract; I am required to give 4 weeks notice, therefore my last working day will be DD/MM/YYYY.
Regards
You

Ideal. Straight to the point and blunt also - Perfect for the scenario. They are a notice of you terminating a contract. They are not a means of thanking people or re-assuring people - that's a discussion to be had in person IMO.

I think, I wrote.
Dear X
I hereby give notice of my intention to leave employment with company Y.
Whilst my notice in my terms and conditions are 12 weeks, I feel that it would be unproductive to work more than 4 weeks notice so unless you are opposed to this I will be leaving on DD/MM/YYYY. I will ensure that I hand over smoothly in order for the business to continue smoothly.
Yours
And then negotiated to 6 weeks. I'd handed over everything in the first 2 and then worked on things that had been bugging me for the next 2. I did sweet FA in the final 2 weeks.

How can you give 'immediate' notice of resignation? You are either resigning with immediate effect or giving notice of resignation. They are a notice of you terminating a contract. They are not a means of thanking people or re-assuring people - that's a discussion to be had in person IMO.

Some people ought to try to see themselves as others might. They might not be so critical of their bosses then.

"I'm resigning immediately, I'm giving four weeks notice, I finish on this date"
Not sure what you mean by the second part.

Its not exactly unheard of after all for bosses to be incompetent.
Personally would think the letter outline above is perfectly okay - but would also think that where possible you should mention gracefully to your current boss - or his boss if the boss is still jetting around the world that you will be handing in your notice.
Best of luck in the new role
Sir Fergie
Thanks Fergie.

Handed notice in this morning and my boss offered to counter the package I've received from my future employer. I took some satisfaction in declining.

Keep it simple, slag nobody and thank them for your time there. Best to burn no bridges etc.
TX.
Agree. I have hired and terminated a lot of people and its not personal. Its business. You never know where your next job will be or whether you will run into a former colleague ( or boss) in another company. Also a very bad idea to slag your former boss or company to your new employer even after you get the job.TX.
