. An hours commute isnt an issue, I was commuting for 3 hours a day until I moved closer to work, and that was on top of a 12 hour day!RISK said:

Thames Valley is a good bet if you don't want to do the London commute and your happy to move. There are a lot of IT jobs all over the country (or so it seems from the emails and calls I get from agencies).

Skills are based around Windows 2003 / 2008 / AD / VMWare ESX. I am in the process of security clearance at the moment.
Doing exams over the course of the rest of this year. Im not looking for an immediate move, but something towards the end of the year / early next year maybe.
Moving isnt an issue. I've already moved city once for work, and while it makes getting to know new people harder by moving, its something I'm prepared to put up with for my career.

I work in Investment Banking. More than half the teams here are made up of external contractors and a heck of a lot have a technology background.If you work in London, do you also live in London? Are IT jobs well paid in London, in the right companies?

Its unlike any industry I have set foot in.
I've work in IT for years. Some of it in London. There are bags of IT jobs in London. Many companies have moved IT resources out of London but there is still plenty there.
Salaries are higher but living there costs a fortune as does commuting. I worked in a team of 20 and only 1 of them lived in London, everyone else commuted from surrounding areas. I could get from MK to Aldgate in about the same time it took him to get across London from Battersea.

I am SC cleared and work in IT in London.
I am just trying to figure out how you are working on getting SC cleared, since you can only be cleared for a specific role? You can't, as far as I am aware apply for an SC clearance unless you have been offered a role requiring it, and even then, it is the Employer who makes the application on your behalf?

You are right. I've been SC and DV cleared. Both are clearing you in that role. Leave the role and your clearance goes. Although having been cleared previously gives a better indication that you are likely to be cleared again. In financial services you will earn 30% more than you would in any other industry, in my experience. You have to be good to get in, but once you have one bank on your CV the door opens nice and wide.If you work in London, do you also live in London? (me: IT Infrastructure, went in through graduate scheme. Can't move out of the industry because nothing else pays as well).

Pretty much spot on. Nowt really comes close in terms of pay in Investment banking for a person wanting a 8.30-6.00 gig.(me: IT Infrastructure, went in through graduate scheme. Can't move out of the industry because nothing else pays as well).
However you must be prepared to put in the hours when required.
And you have to have some nous!

I will bare all this in mind when I look to move. Best get some quals behind me I guess before I start looking.
Im happy doing the graft and I work long hours as it is now, so not much of an issue really. I want to make something of myself, if that makes sense?

Seriously though, what I look for is people with a brain who aren't afraid to use it. I'm not interested in people who just do what they're told, even if they deliver on time every time.Depends entirely on what you define as IT work.
Are you looking for programmer, sys ad or help desk (first / second / third level)?
Plenty out there. We recently recruited someone for our service desk and the general level of applicants (even via an agency) was pretty poor. Took us 4 months to find someone decent.

I guess Sys Ad or Help Desk depending on the money, but I'd rather move into administration.
