Renting chalets to sub-let

A friend of a friend used to rent a large chalet in France on a long term basis and lived there all year - collecting people from air port, cooking , cleaning, entertaining etc. money wasn't amazing but the best life ever.

Is this common? How could I go about this? I've had a quick google search but obviously it just comes back with week long holiday lets / travel agencies.
