Hi guys,

I'm a developer (although work in 3rd line dev support to break into different technologies). I earn a wage that would make me at the top-end of a mid-level person.

Looking at jobs that pay 10k and above over what I earn now, a theme runs across some of these jobs that you need team management experience. In my current role, I don't do any people management (although the closest I get to this is to mentor two junior colleagues, which does help to develop my skills but is not the same thing).

Thus, the dilemma is: Without team management experience, you can't get some high-end jobs, and if you can't get those jobs, you can't get team management experience. A bit like without experience you can't get a job, and without a job, you can't get experience.

How do you guys recommend breaking into the barrier of getting team management/leadership experience?

Thanks

voluntary work ? although some recruiters are hugely ignorant and exclude experienced team leaders from other sectors with in-sector experience ( whether the other sector is paid or volunteer) ...

Volunteering is a good start. But might also looking hard at what you do now and what you have done in the past, as this may throw up evidence of managing small teams. Good luck!
