There is some disquiet at work over the hours we work and the amount of time off we receive in return. I have no idea whether or not we have grounds to feel aggrieved but some colleagues obviously do. I wonder if somebody who knows a bit about these things can offer their opinion.

Our rota is 5 days on and 3 off, then 6 days on with 2 off. There are three of us on this rota and the intention of it is to provide weekend cover as the site is open 7 days a week. We receive the standard 28 days per year leave in addition (inc bank holidays)

Some believe that we should receive extra compensation due to the regular full weekends (sat, sun) that we work. We do not receive extra pay or time in lieu for working sat,sun as it is factored into our working week. Prior to me starting here, my colleagues worked 5 on and 3 off each week which absorbed the bank holiday allowance but they still had the statutory 20 days leave. There is a desire to return to that system as it offered some compensation for unsociable hours and redressed the work/social balance somewhat.

I'd be interested to know your thoughts as to whether or not you feel this is acceptable, I'll reiterate that I have no idea if our employer is being unfair. Personally I resent the amount of weekends I have to work but I knew when I started that I would be expected to work some. (the 5 on, 3 off system was just being phased out when I joined)

Thanks in advance!

The statutory holiday entitlement is 26.9 shifts for the year. Each shift being 8 hours.

I Think

Thanks for your answers. It looks as though we should get a couple of extra days for the number of hours worked annually. Is there anything that relates to leave in lieu of working weekends?

You mean as in getting extra holiday entitlement because your working day falls on a weekend rather than a weekday?

I'd be very surprised if there was.

Me too but it's what my colleagues are chuntering about. I think that short of changing the shift pattern they are on a hiding to nothing
