Hi guys. I'm in a really confusing situation atm and in need of some help and advice. Basically I've been working part time at a place for nearly five years. All those years part time was enough for me as I was still studying, however this year I dropped out of uni and got lazy so I still carried on with those hours.
Budget in our department got tight and a few skilled people got transferred to crappy departments , it didn't help when one of our staff also got pregers and is about to leave next week for maternity leave. With all that's happening, everyones place has became extremely important in the department as the cost and training or brining new people in now is just too much.
Around feb/march I decided I would leave this job for full time hours because part time just didn't cut it for me however before I could search for anything my manager had a chat with me, and pretty much pleaded with me regarding leaving and if I was ever to leave I would tell him in advance and how much the department needs me etc.., also promised me hours from the maternity leave staff. I decided to call of the job search off and stay, even if it meant I had to work my current hours for a bit longer but eventually I would be given the promised full time hours.
Fast forward to today, I'm still waiting to be told about those hours, even though the pregnant person is leaving next week. I also go on holiday for a few weeks next week, I find this unusual as the manager has been going on about giving the hours to me for so long and has told me to be prepared for ages but nothing has been said about the hours recently or when to start and s
t got even worse when I found he has offered 40 hours to one of the people he kicked out to another department. It pretty much looks likes he's fked me over and given those hours he promised me to someone else.
As soon as I found this out I decided to look for a job and I found a place at a rival company, just early stages now but they have asked me to go in and discuss things with them with my CV, I don't know if I should talk to my current manager about the promised hours or go in to the new place and discuss things with them. Another problem I have is also I'm not sure what's going on with my life from september/october onwards. because my my plan has been to go back to uni and study something else, however things have been difficult and I have been rejected from all the uni's I've applied for, ended up going through ucas extra in order to apply to one more uni and now I'm waiting for that to come back. If thats unsuccessful I will have to go through cleaning. As you can see I'm still confused to what I'll be doing from october onwards.
I really don't know what to do atm. I was really hoping to get those temp hours from the maternity leave staff and as it was temp things worked out perfectly if I went to uni but now if I leave and go to uni, I will end up losing the new job.

It is early July. You will know about uni in 2 months. Stay where you are but try to get an offer of the other job and also try to get more hours. by the time it all washes through and you actually HAVE to make a final choice your options will be clearer.
BTW Uni is not the answer to everything and only bother getting into that level of debt if you really think it will make a difference to your life.
Likewise I'm not sure I like the idea of having to go through 'cleaning' to get into uni. Many students met when there would have failed this new requirement

lol I meant clearing. I agree with you regarding uni but I've kinda screwed up big time. ATM I don't really have any decent skills that will ensure a good future prospect. My current sector pays crap with no future in it and I also hate it with passion and I also screwed up my last degree. BTW Uni is not the answer to everything and only bother getting into that level of debt if you really think it will make a difference to your life.

Atm I have nothing going for me and uni is my only hope. If I didn't waste all those years on uni I could have concentrated on going up the ladder and building a business or something but now It's too late and I don't have any money.
A few tough years await me but I'm determined to sort my life out and fix the mistakes I have done!

You are under 40 I take it? You seem to have taken the kick up the arse so start now. I nearly had a total change last year (at 36)but bugged out as on balance I was on the right track, just having one of those wobbles you will have your entire life. In your case it seems that you don't have a track right now so need to get a couple planned out and then head down one with commitment.
If you honestly believe that a degree is the only way to get ahead in the field you wish to work then do it, but remember there are 1,000's out there with good degrees who have less prospects than you have right now!
basically you have to decide if you want to spend the next three years preparing for a career or building one of your own. If my job didn't legally require me to have a degree I most likely would not have bothered with uni.
Simple.........you need to be clear in YOUR head....... Education or Employment?
If former, stay where you are and continue applying to "uni".
If latter, go to the prospective employer and interview, without discussing with present employer!

This. Less passive-aggressive despair and more "hey, you promised me hours you honky-ass mofo!".In general, the word of your employer is worth zip unless you get it in writing. There's a lot of managers out there who'll blow smoke up your ass for months to get what they want before giving you the "we've had a rethink/market conditions have changed/things are fluid at the moment" bs.
1. Go for the new job, as if your life depended on it. Don't speak to your current manager unless you get offered the new job.
2. If you get a firm job offer, ask your manager to better it. If he won't put what you want in writing there and then (no more "promises"), take the new job.
3. Take a "year out" to save more money, assess your priorities and think about uni (or not) for September 2014.
