working our your leave - how do you cope

So... for about a month I've known I have a new job. Infact, not just any new job, but a big leap up in the deathmatch-style career ladder of my chosen profession. I am very excited. Infact I can't wait to get started. But I can't start until October. Infact, not only am I moving job, I am moving country and returning to the UK. I can't wait to do that either.

But herein lies the problem... my mind has moved on, my body is stuck here for 10 weeks, and I have a lot to do. How on earth do you motivate yourself to keep going in this kind of situation? I am finding it incredibly hard. My mind is gone from my projects here, from the place, from the people, and it's all in the next place. But somehow i have to grind out the work here for another 2.5 months. How do people cope with doing this?

Can't help but you are not alone.

I've eight weeks notice to work before I leave a career of 15 years (seven years in this organisation) which I detest and have been unhappy in for about 5 years before starting on retraining for something I've wanted to do for years.

This combined with the heat (no aircon in the office) means productivity is at an all time low!

Ask your new employer if you can start any earlier and then walk out.

You find yourself in a common situation and most good employers will appreciate this. If it's really a problem and they can afford to let you go without the business going belly up then I'd ask. You'd obviously forgo any further pay and allowances. Good luck!

sadly, accelerating the switch isn't an option really, especially moving earlier, given the logitistics of an international move.

i actually have plenty to do for my new job already... it's just that i could do that at home and not here...

i have lots of exciting work here to finish off, just no desire to do it. oh well...

Another one in the same boat. 3 weeks to go before the end of my current employment. Then 2 weeks away with the family abroad (thank god I have taken next to no leave this year so I'm owed 9.5 days accrued holiday pay and my Q2 bonus to cover the lack of income).

Then it's B/H Monday and then I start my new job back at my previous employer.

I'm in leaving mode this week but the next 2 weeks will be leaving PLUS holiday mode.
