Working on the Rigs

Does / has anyone on here work on the oil rigs in Aberdeen ?

Im from a motor engineering background but im looking for a change. Seems like it would be a good step although id probably need some training / qualifications which im happy to do.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get into a position on one ? Which are the good companys to work for and websites to look at etc

Having done my bosiet(offshore survival), mist, irata lvl1 and started my Ndt ut training I can tell you with all honesty that without a family member or friend who can help you get a start the answer is don't get your hopes up for a job. I am lucky that I have a few family members in the industry but as new start with no offshore experience I am finding it very difficult getting a job offshore. Apparently It gets easier after your first trip but it is getting those first trips that are a nightmare.

there's a thread running about working offshore running in the Scotland region. lots of useful advice and local/industry knowledge if people working on the rigs right now! they'll prob answer any questions!

Genuine question - with fracking being touted as the new thing - could working in that field onshore give sufficient industry experience to work offshore? I appreciate there are a raft of exams and qualifications that are necessary to work on rigs that you wouldn't normally acquire 'onland'....
Only reason is I have previously been lucky enough to secure work as an 'offsider' on a land drilling rig and always wondered if offshore would be for me...
I'm not an idiot and am hard working and appreciate the work is hard, long and either very hot or very cold
That and I note fracking licences are potentially becoming available in Sussex so making this possibly a genuine way into the industry? or not?

My wife is an HR Director for a well know company that has an Oil and Gas division. Do you want me to ask her if she can put you in contact with someone? Or she may just be able to offer some afvice.
