Casual Fridays

In organisations where Monday to Thursday the dress code is formal (suit & tie or trousers, shirt and tie) what does 'Casual Friday' actually mean?

Do you lose the tie and nothing else, wear a dressed down shirt and chinos, a t-shirt and jeans, or board shorts and flip-flops?

I tend to go for white tie, as I think that sets the right tone, really.

In my former place of work it meant jeans and t shirt or a casual shirt. On my feat I'd wear loafers or trainers. Never wore shorts.

For the South Africans it meant khaki shorts, t shirt and flip flops.

People would only be in a suit/shirt/tie if they had a meeting, or if they'd not been home on Thursday night.

Anything from shirt and jeans, to shorts and t-shirt ,to hoody and jogging bottoms. Weather/bravery dependent. Some people have very little sense of fashion and are ribbed accordingly.

If I ever venture into the head office on a weekday, very rarely as site based, it is suit Monday to Thursday and dress down Friday with strict rules of only wearing a company polo shirt and jeans that are not faded or ripped.

I have been given talking to for wearing cords and a jumper when I didn't know better.

casual Friday's highlight that suits and ties in an office arent really needed during the rest of the week (unless meeting a client)

At my current workplace there is no dress code. It's an "artistic" industry with a realtively young average employee age, and the ratio of women to men is 4:1.

A few of us wear three piece suits on Fridays so I suppose our place is the opposite. But generally, for men, casual Fridays would be smart casual. So, no tie, chinos and jacket. Perhaps smart jeans instead of chinos if your place is that way inclined. And smart shoes - brogues or the like.

Casual fridays eergh. To my mind it reeks of desperation, searching for employee 'perks' that dont involve spending money.

My workplace does casual fridays, given that every other day is smart casual anyway everyone just ends up wearing the same as they do normally.

at a job a long time ago, we lost casual friday as one chap took it too far.

A few years ago, I worked for a recruitment agency.

Essentially a rather crappy little job for a rather crappy little company, the directors of which thought it was something much bigger and more important than it was. Reflected in the fact that it went bust 2 years ago

Anyway, despite this, I always wore immaculate suits and ties to work, but we had a casual Friday too. Most people just wore jeans and an open shirt.


One night I stayed at what you might deem a 'random bird's house' and intended to wake up early, go home, shower and change and go to work. However, I actually woke up way too late to do that, so attended work straight from her place, in jeans and a rugby top with trainers.

To my amazement, one of the Directors said within 5 minutes of arriving 'can I have a word?' And took me into his office.

He actually only wanted to know why I was wearing what I was wearing...so I told him the story, expecting him to maybe wink, grin and say 'ah, ok, fair enough just this once!' But he actually rolled his eyes and sarcastically said 'oh, really? how un-professional...'

I countered by saying 'but this wouldn't be an issue on a Friday, would it?' To which he replied 'no, but it is a Thursday. I expect better from my staff...'



Dick. I decided to leave there and then!
