Any Weld Inspectors/Integrity engineers on here? Advice
Discussion
Hi guys
First time poster! Just seeing if there are any weld inspectors/integrity engineers or even corrosion engineers on here for a bit of advice. I'm a time-served welder been with the same company for 6 years and served my apprenticeship with them. Problem is, no matter how many times I apply or enquire about a position within the quality dept. its always unsuccessful.
It doesn't help that its a ," it's who you know not what you've got" kind of place, as well as, the gaffers and managers golf buddies.
I've got my MPI/LPI level 2 certs and CSWIP level 1 and i'm working my way through a honours degree with the Open Uni at the moment. Just really feel like i'm banging my head off a brick wall with this stuff sometimes.
If there's anyone who could give advice it would be really appreciated, maybe different routes into this particular area, etc, etc.
Cheers

You would really need the Rad and UT certs, there are loads of positions for UT tecs, can you still get the 3.1 from CSWIP? i now loads ow WI's who atill have them on their CV but not sure if they are available, how are you qualified we would normally want G5 or G6 welder before we moved somne sone to inspection
Look at Morson Group Ltd. They supply staff for wide spec of trades for inland, offshore and abroad. All of the clients are well known names building everything from Offshore platforms to aircraft carriers and oil installations. I lot of welding and QC work with them home and away. As Neville above mentioned a lot of money to be made abroad even on a short term contracts. Think 5/7K a month, sometimes tax free. Some of the contracts are 4 to 6 months, some of them 12/18.
Cheers for the advice guys. I've tried applying for a QC position with other companies but I think it's my lack of experience that's letting me down. I can do the job well enough, been inspecting welds and using MPI for a while now as well, but it's just trying to get my foot in the door that's the problem!
I've registered with Morsons and Matchtech but no luck I'm afraid.

Are you telling people what you do using the correct languge? Are you looking to de an NDT tec or a WI?Welding inspectors do more thn inspect weld using mpi, they supervise the entire process, write and approve weld procedures, visual inspection of weld runs and final weld etc, If you want to do weld ispection you need more than a ASNT it MPI and DPI, and the salraies people are quoting on here are wrong, there are loads of jobs for well qualified weld inspectors on 20K US$ a month in the far East and Aus, if you have the ight qualifcations,
You are approaching this from the wrong angle, having a welders background you are better off going the welding Inspector route PCN/CSWIP, having the NDT certs in addition is an advantage, to do/get your UT/NDT certs is relatively easy, to be good at it takes several years of hands on mixed application/experience.
After your WI have a look at API or ASME (Matthews engineering) plant inspection courses if you are going for the "integrity" side. The CSWIP ones require renewal etc as for the NDT/WI certification, whilst the API is not required to be renewed, although this may change at a later date. (confirmation of this would be useful).
Note "some" inspectors etc, will be on US 20,000 a month, very few NDT/WI positions overseas, except for Oz, pay that much mainly due to the large number of Indian/Thai/Philipino technicians/Inspectors who will have a degree in something or other and are paid considerably less than the European/US equivalent.
Note the American companies do seem to prefer a welders exprience to NDT when taking on Inspectors. (There is alot of i know him he knows him still involved in this).
