Graduate Engineer Available now!

A bit of a long shot posting on here I know but thought I'd give a go!

Anyway I am a graduate Mechanical Engineer (BEng) with a 2:1 from Aston University (IMechE accredited) looking for work.

I have also completed a paid post graduate placement for a large aerospace manufacturer, helping senior manufacturing engineers implement 'lean principles' as well as having some experience in working as a production planner! (Bit random I know).

I would consider working in any role and any industry, very flexible on pay rate too! Only issue I do have is that due to external responsibilities I am unable to relocate, hence only looking for roles around the Birmingham/Coventry/Solihull (west midlands).

Did receive a couple of responses from some members on here, but due to my location restrictions I didn't want to waste their time!

Tried getting on any grad schemes? Sounds like JLR would be perfect as a manufacturing engineer?

Although if you want to get in there now maybe try contracting somewhere?i know a couple of people who did just that straight out of uni.

Thanks for your reply, have tried numerous times with both JLR and Tata, seems you need a couple of years experience in order to contract? Have applied to many through the recruitment agencies but have had no response.

Not sure what type of role (in contracting) would be available to graduates fresh out of uni? Was it as a manufacturing engineer?
To be honest I'd work for minimum wage just to get my foot in the door!!

To be honest i'm not sure what roles they did nor who they worked for, just that they did contracting as they couldn't get a grad job.

Have you spoken to the company you have experience with already about jobs or they not in the area? Maybe try for more industrial placements and hope you get a lucky break there. All the grad job recruitment will be open now so try there as well, have nothing to lose.

Finally one piece of advice i got off a tutor at uni was if i was struggling to get a job at a big firm then maybe look at the suppliers to that firm as they will have very similar jobs that get less applicants and you may be able to work your way into the bigger company.

Have tried contacting the company I was working for before, but they seem uninterested. I actually got my placement there by chance as I had (and still am) been sending out speculative emails to various companies, to see if they had any vacancies.

I was brought on but the person who in fact have me the job left the company a few weeks later! I was just moved about and just had to pick things up as I went along! I was told that my contract would be up on the x of the x and shown the door.

Have applied to a lot of other internships/placements etc but tbh not a lot out there. Have also applied to a lot of the suppliers to companies such as JLR etc but the only vacancies they seem to have are for experienced engineers.

I have actually even paid of the full tuition fees £10,000+ for nothing it seems! It's also hard getting non-skilled jobs as I think the employers see that I have a engineering degree, and will move on as soon as I find a degree related job. Think I will have to leave out my degree on my cv and start applying for factory jobs....

You probably know about this... but gradcracker? they just sort Engineering based graduate programs. I got mine on there when I was desperate for a grad job, but be careful what you wish for! It was about as rewarding as a kick in the nuts. Some can be really good, though. I heard great things about National Grid and their scheme.

Unfortunately by not being able to relocate you're really limiting your options (as I'm sure you already know).

Also this is really the wrong time of year to be hunting for graduate roles, most are usually advertised around the beginning of the year I think.

Where I am the new grads are just starting this week and next week. They were being interviewed 2-3 months ago now.

Have you considered an engineering/science based Knowledge Transfer Partnership? www.ktponline.org.uk/

Or alternatively, have you considered going down a research route? 3-4yrs funded or industrially sponsored PhD/EngD? (what I did - feel free to PM if you have any questions)

Either could be a good solution for you, will give reasonable income for the time-being and greatly enhance future employability.

Not entirely true. I was looking for grad jobs last year and alot of places especially "better" schemes close on the 31st December if not sooner. There are plenty that close after that date though. I was interviewed last march and had my job sorted by then although it was rare for someone to have a job sorted that soon.

That's interesting, I didn't start looking until the new year of my final year, didn't realise some would have already closed.

It largely depends on what those external responsibilities actually are - and I don't expect the OP to state them on a public forum.

My point was, the OP may be constraining themselves to that area due to using a car, when in reality a train journey may offer a slightly wider net, but still allow him to meet those external responsibilities.

There aren't many of these sort of posts where I think the OP might be a decent chap trying hard, but this is one of those rare examples. I hope he finds something good.
