Wanted - Electrician/Electrical Contractor

What is needed:

1. Knowledgeable type who is willing & able to accommodate new technology & "different" installation techniques.
2. Those comfortable using drawings as a medium for gleaming the scope/requirements of a particular task.
3. Those who treat equipment/materials supplied to them with respect.
4. Those who take pride in/personal responsibility for their standard of work.

What is NOT needed:

1. Persons who struggle with anything outside of what they did the day before.
2. Persons who resist the instruction to read the project drawings.
3. Persons who insist upon practising their own definition of "finished".
4. Persons who, because they don't personally purchase materials/equipment are not too bothered how they treat them/where they leave them.
5. Persons who "get paid for turning up".

Before the inevitable tirade ensues, this is the culmination of over 3 years of putting-up with the ste that (IMO) is the typical operative in the UK today.

I appreciate that there will be dozens of examples of great people who would easily fit the bill, it's just that I haven't seen one.


Well, actually, that's not true - I haven't seen one in the installation area of work in which I'm engaged.


This IS a serious request. I'm not sure whether the solution is a persons/persons on a self-employed basis, or to actually go back on the tools & take on an employee/employees.

You make a valid point - UK, sites could be anywhere south of Birmingham at present.

You have written a post asking for someone to come to work for you/your company and in you write what you want and what you don't want. You have four positives yet 5 negatives, if I were you I wouldn`t have even put in the negatives, that something you can do later in sorting out the "chaff" after or during the interview stage. You don't have any location, you have no ball-park figure of salary, you don't mention if the work is in the field, in a factory, in an office or anywhere. You swear in your first quest for trying to find your ideal electrician, all these things will not go in your favour to find the right person.

I see in your own profile you are "Tired" in your occupation and under notes "RTFM"....seriously, if I was looking for a change of job and if I was an electrician I wouldn't think twice about steering clear, just by doing a little homework myself.

All in my opinion of course and you did say that you had you flame suit on, maybe a totally different approach might work wonders for you. Hope you get what and who you want.

Like phumy says the tone is a little confrontational for an advert, it'd be like going on match.com and reading a profile thats someone venting about how badly they've been treated.

But I do understand too despair at the trade can be well grounded. What is it your looking for in terms of time, odd days, occasional projects, full time etc?

For one client, there are currently 1-2 projects per year plus ongoing works at his other existing sites.

What I'd hoped to do is to establish a "go to" installer for projects.

The last two projects have had a tender value in the region of £90 - 110K.


Another client is just about to commence the fit-out of his first project (a modular building - they are the manufacturers of the modular panels).

The potential here could be enormous and it's on this project that I'm considering overseeing/installing the M&E myself to prevent the shambles that occurred on the aforementioned projects.


None of this stuff is complicated Ben, provided the installer can maintain a reasonable attention span & acknowledges the importance of drawings & specification document/schedules in delivering the job properly.



May I ask what make up of work you have (domestic/commercial/school/hospital/industrial etc)?



My problems don't just revolve around the install though, I find manufacturers & suppliers equally test my patience.

Today's episode involved me calling the sales chap for a lighting manufacturer to ask him why, having paid to have some mounting brackets made to fit his fittings, the fittings arrive today with a completely different gear tray pattern rendering my brackets useless.

After being told that they made the changes in October 2012, I was asked to send over a screen shot of their website showing today's date & the drawing of the gear tray still showing the old pattern.


And don't get me started on drivers with a 10mm space for terminating a 5-core flex!

I spent about 8 years doing just about everything and the last 10 or so working for myself, 80% domestic with occasional forays into shops and industrial units

We should probably have a chat. I've been pondering a move sideways or into something more specialised for a couple of years.

Yes, well no-one is a cowboy until you turn up to site & all you see is horse-hoof marks in the dirt.

Anyway, it looks like the next project will see me back on the tools to install it.

Discussed things with Ben this morning - all very positive & encouraging.


It looks like PH may have solved yet another resource gap - 180 with a single dart.
