Accountancy

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice if anyone knows.

Currently a peripatetic music teacher with the county music service, but looking to move into accountancy. I'd like to do on the job training, and the route I have in mind is sending a CV and cover letter to various local firms to see if they would employ me, but not sure whether this would be the most effective route or if there's anything else I could do to make me more employable as an accountant (given I've zero experience in the field apart from work experience far too long ago and a little budgeting here and there in current role)?

If you just want something to get your foot in the door, do a couple of modules towards a qualification - AAT cheap, ACA not, various bits in between... It will make a difference compared to someone without anything, but you'll still be right at the back of the queue compared to people who have some experience.

I'd say your chances of getting a job in accountancy with no qualifications and no experience is pretty much zero.

I would be looking at starting out on your AAT, which you can do part time or in the evenings, this is the quickest route to getting a real qualification. After doing your AAT (stage 2 at least) you will have a much better chance of getting a job, though don't expect a very big salary. Once you've got your AAT and hopefully some industry experience then you can decide whether you want to go all the way to becoming a "proper" accountant.

That's a good shout, thanks - just been looking at the site! I'll still send the applications off to some firms, hopefully as my wage would be lower due to training someone will look, but it gives me something to be doing proactively in the mean time!
