These rumours have been going round for years. As far as I'm aware the HATO's are here to stay.

It's not bad considering they seem to be asking for no qualifications, skills or relevant experience.

I bunged in an application for this today actually.

The pay is rather low, but I'd like a change from being deskbound to something out on the road, and at the moment I just need a new job for my own sanity!

FWIW the on-road HATOs I have talked to all find it very rewarding (although demanding) work.

Public sector pensions are completely shafted, private healthcare yeah right.

Hazardous/Dangerous environment = everyone who commutes on the M25 then? As for being hazardous and dangerous... tell that to someone serving as infantry in the Army stationed out in Iraq/Afghan. Very few of them will be on anything near 40k.

Unsociable hours - so is it for bar staff in nightclubs, bouncers, delivering newspapers...

Customer facing? They're a public service. I wouldn't call it customer facing. You're just more of a helpful face. No sales involved.

Traffic management powers? They get to put a few cones out in the road.

Vehicle removing... I've not seen them in any other vehicle than their Land Rovers... making sure the correct service has been called, making the 'situation' safe and making sure no one is endangered and to get traffic moving swiftly if it has been made stationary by something simple such as a piece of tyre in the road.

Honestly, I'm not undermining this job, but to think it would pay 40k is insane IMO. It's a relatively trivial job that requires little thinking and most of the day sitting parked in lay-by's waiting for congestion/break-down/debris in road/home time.

That pay looks about spot on for this. In fact, I'd say 25k was generous.

Come now, working on (as opposed to driving down) the motorway is dangerous. Everyone knows this.

Still pretty decent, though. I've never worked anywhere that offers anything like 30 days or has better than the legal-minimum 3% matched pension.

What aload of st, I hate it when people refer to soldiers pay or nurses pay. I earned pretty well in the army and mostly worked a 19 Hour week.....and spent alot of the time playing rugby and boxing, The only time I really earned my money was in Afghanistan.

At the end of the day, we don't really know what their job involves or the responsibility they have, and taking a pure uneducated guess or assumption about them without knowing the ins and outs of the job is a bit naive. Is it well paid? well it depends what they have to do for it and their responsibilitys.

My dad has been a Traffic Officer since 2006 and loves it. He's been in the Civil Service for probably 30 years so not sure exactly what pay he is on. I think there is more to it than people say and give credit for.

I have also applied, desperate in the hope to get away from my desk job into a more interesting job.

ETA: for anyone interested, there have been over 1000 applications for the available positions (somewhere between 50 and 70 I think)
