Any Royal Mail workers on here?

The missus has an interview at Royal Mail tomorrow to become a Post Woman.

Any current workers got any tips?

One thing she has been trying to research is how they do the sorting before going out on their round - is it literally a matter of sorting by postcode and house number or is there more to it?

im a former postman.

the sorting comes in sort of 2 stages, theres delivery preperation, which is preparing your delivery route which you will do, there will be a big metal frame with all the street names and house numbers on it,which is like a map of the route you will do with everything in order., this majority of the mail to be sorted here will be what they call "walk-sorted", a machine will have already put this mail in order of delivery, so you literately just put it in the frame letter by letter according to the delivery,

the main sorting is the unsorted mail that comes into the delivery office, not every postman does this this job, it varies by delivery office but you will be expected to do it from time to time i imagine.

generally there will be trays of unsorted mail which could be for anywhere where your delivery office delivers, and you will have to sort them to the delivery route they are meant to go to within the office, Again this will be another big metal frame with all the delivery routes in the office on it. you will look at the postcode/address and then sort it into the correct delivery route. there is usually a big sheet of paper which will tell you which street is on which route, but after a while you will start to just know. same thing for packets except instead of a metal frame there will be lots of hanging bags which parcels get put into for each route.
