Career move: IT to Service Management
Discussion
I'm currently working in IT, I have done for 10 years or so and I'm relatively senior. I've being wanting to get more involved in business, project management and generally spread my wings and diversify.
Today I was offered a role in Service Management and a decent payrise to boot. This would be an internal job move (I work for a large bank), but would mean leaving behind 10 years’ experience in IT.
I'm hungry for a change, but obviously wary about leaving behind the IT side (the comfort zone I guess!)
Has anyone made a similar move? Or will service be the death of me?

What's the role? in my experiemce, IT is Service Managent, it's essentially the management of IT, usually based around the ITIL model of 'managements' such as change, incident, problem, release etc, that allow the Services to run smoothly.
If it's what I think it is, this certainly a very valid and logical career progression fir someone technical, so best of luck and make thw most of it!

Correct, that's exactly what it is. Thanks for the positive comment If it's what I think it is, this certainly a very valid and logical career progression fir someone technical, so best of luck and make thw most of it!

My wife is a service manager for a major telco.
It's mostly a role that puts you it the position of translating between the business and the geeks with probably some vendor relationship management. Very focused on fault resolution, ITIL, process procedure and escalation and service levels.
Essentially it's about know who to kick and when and when to push back.
Very much an IT centric role.
