Hate my job. 21- what to do?
Discussion
I'm 21, just competed my apprentiship to become a security engineer, fire security that kind of thing.
Really not enjoying it, the pay is ok, but I'm just struggling to really come to terms with something I had no prior interest in.
I've always struggled with knowing what I wanted to do, always fancied being a mechanic and regret not doing it at college, always ruled it out for the poor wage.
Decommissioning stuff always took my eye as did demolition, I would love to work in a field like that, no idea how to get into this.
Also heavily into cars, anything big construction wise. I took civil engineering at college and hated it, but like the idea or working as a designer or similar.
What sort of things could I be looking at? Or should I stick with the security engineer ( I hate the term engineer when I have no real qualification )
I know you should stick at things but if it's making you unhappy why should you stay?
Based in South Wales. Left school and didn't finish college. Not phased by having to do another apprentiship.

In these circumstances there is only one good piece of advice I've ever been given....
Decide where you want to be, then make a plan of how you get there.
...on Monday start tackling item 1 on the plan.
I loitered in jobs I hated for years. It was only when I worked out what I should be doing that I actually got off my backside and did something about it. I was 43 when I came up with my plan, I'm 47 now and loving every minute of my new direction.
Luckily for me it wasn't massive job change but it carried some major financial risk. It wasn't easy to take the first step as it was the biggest one, but once I knew what my goal was it was far easier to make the initial step.

At 23 I realised I was wasting my life in a dead end job. At 26 I'm still there, but for 3 years I've been in the recruitment process for the Royal Navy, and I join in April. Many jobs required no qualifications, although I had a few. Never too late to change. Don't stay where you are if you hate it, but remember it's only you who can do something about it. Good luck.
Not much to add to the good advice given above other than when deciding where you want to be has also got to be based upon some probability. Determining what is probable is quite a skill and requires a bit of time and interrogation of ones competences, capacity, drive and values & standards. Good luck!
